Finally, John Kerry to fight O'Neil --- I hope!.....
I never understood why he didn't fight back against the SBV lies!

John Kerry may wage war against Viet war veteran:
: New York, Nov 19 : After losing to George Bush in the presidential elections , John Kerry is now preparing for another fight with John O'Neill, the "Unfit for Command" author who claims some of the credit for Kerry's defeat.

In the book, O'Neill, who, like Kerry, commanded swift boats in Vietnam , severly criticised Kerry's war record and branded him a traitor.

O'Neill reportedly sold over 800,000 copies of the book and his group, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, raised 25 million dollars to battle the Kerry campaign and ran TV ads trashing the candidate.

According to the New York Post, Kerry is said to be furious with his staffers who advised him not to fight back against O'Neill.

"The Kerry camp is thinking about filing a libel lawsuit against Regnery and O'Neill," a source close to the candidate's inner circle was quoted by the paper, as saying.

"I don't know if they will actually go forward, but consideration is serious. If Kerry plans on running again in 2008 - and I'm hearing he will - it would make sense that he'd file the suit," the source added.(ANI)

he should have fought them long ago but they need to be exposed publicly for what they are --- even if the election is over. Kerry was wrong, imo, not to fight them from the get-go but I want to see them get their due - late or not!

38. Kerry has the MONEY and the INTELLIGENCE to SUE and WIN
I saw John O'Neill on Nightline with Ted Koppel and he is a stupid idiot. He was as inarticulate as all get out and didn't even appear to have an 80 I.Q.

Kerry being an A+++ SUPER INTELLIGENT Attorney will WIPE the Swifties in the mud --- where they belong.

20. It may be too little, too late for this battle
But Kerry is looking to win the WAR. There is a reason JK is suing the Swifties: not only because they ruined his good name, but also that of Democrats in general. I think he is fighting for us, only not the battle we wanted him to fight.

Barry Goldwater sued surrogates of LBJ after he lost the 1964 Presidential election for the same reasons: dirty tricks, libel, and smear campaigns by the opponent or opposition's surrogates.

2004 may well be the 1964 for the Democrats, and if he should win this lawsuit, it will expose the Repukes as the despicable liars they are. Repukes across the board will lose their credibility once and for all, and we'll get our majority back, God willing.

The war against FOX and the media moguls who make the decisions these days.

Maybe the Dems can focus the next four years on cleaning up the propaganda problem! Is that asking for too much?

Here's hoping that O'Neil and Rove get theirs! :toast:

If he wins, what does he win? People on the right are not going to believe him anyway.

If he loses though....what does he lose? The right will trumpet his loss as proof that everything the swoftboatvets said was true.

I believe this one must be fought. The cost of not fighting is to unleash this kind of smear campaign on everyone that even think of opposing the evil empire. It is not just for Kerry but for all of us (IMO). The question is, will Kerry do it because it is right or will he let it slide because it might hurt him politically.

Anyone not inflated with a sense of entitlement would have fought or at least hired attorneies competent in slander/libel law to fight this battle during the campaign and an astute candidate would have used it to his advantage, with or without his advisors advice.

30. This is something thats really confused me...
I'm from the UK and in english politics we tend to just come right out and say it and I can't for the life of me understand why Kerry didn't just put them on the defensive by saying that they hadn't gotten over Vietnam. That they believed the U.S. could win. And why didn't he point out to the press that he helped save a lot of lives by talking to congress about the atrocities which everyone knows to be fact? O'neal may have had to suffer but thats not Kerrys fault. Thats Nixons. Not that I'm defending O'neal. He's an ass but Kerry had me in the dark on this one.

52. He did say some of those things.
Unlike the U.K., we don't have much advocacy journalism here, and what we do have is right wing. So a lot of the things Kerry, or his campaign, said went unreported.

For me, the most bizarre media thing of the whole campaign was the spectacle of reporters asking the same question over and over: "Where's Edwards?" It was as if he was on a safari in darkest Africa, and they had no idea where he was, yet they had reporters on his campaign plane everywhere he went. It was code for "Edwards isn't making a jackass of himself, so we won't give him coverage." Similarly, unless Kerry said something that could have fanned the controversy even more, it wasn't going to get coverage. And of course, controversy would have hurt Kerry in this affair by drawing even more attention to it. Then the line would have been, "Kerry brought it on himself by sinking to their level," just as the actual line was, "Kerry brought it on himself by highlighting his Vietnam service."

If the media are looking for controversy, they will find it, and there isn't much anyone can do about it. That was the genius of the Swift Hoax: it gave the media something to focus on during the lull between the two party conventions, and the media won't turn down a free lunch.

The lawsuit is more civilized, of course, but fuck it, the public likes blood.

37. John O'Neill Swift Vet
Kerry gets blasted by the SwiftVets4"truth" but according to swiftboats.net the aveage time for an OIC on a swiftboat is about 5 months...in the case of O'Neill himself, he only served 5 months in command compared to Kerry's 4 ! BFD. The rest of O'Neill's time was spent as a staff officer. Kerry did about the same thing and about the same time lengths.

(See the posting at http://loonaticleft.typepad.com/loonatic_left/2004/07/swiftboats_for_.html then scroll down about halfway to post by Mike Aug 20, 2004 05:48 PM )

Furthermore, Kerry's facts about atrocities are verified in the Toledo Blade's prizewinning series on Tiger Force and Stanley Karnow's "Vietnam: A Television History" from PBS...see especially the on-air confessions of soldiers in the final episode. As for the Cambodia B.S. O'Neill et al threw out for the ignorant media to spread, Kerry's recollections were no more a distortion than O'Neills about being in Cambodia and O'Neill is caught bragging about it on Nixon's own tapes!

And what about Nixon's own culpability ? See http://www.tompaine.com/feature2.cfm/ID/3621 "Nixon's Treason: He stopped an early peace in Vietnam--Drugs, Wife-beating, What about 20,000 American Dead ?" To top it off, LBJ himself knew the war was unwinnable, yet kept the damn thing rolling just like Nixon did. And Kerry was the 'bad guy' ???? Who are these Swiftys trying to kid ?

It would all be a waste of time, effort and money. Why the hell would anyone put any effort into any candidate/party while evoting exists? It's futile. The repukes own this country now and with evoting, NO OTHER PARTY WILL EVER WIN THE WH. Hell, by 2008, they we will have a 1 party government. So, for now, other things in life must be taken care of.

The bashing Kerry took from O'Neil was personal. Letting his handlers determine his response, or non-response, was stupid and left the impression that there must have been some truth to the liar's fabrications. If ever there was a time to have gone into "mad as hell" mode, that was it.

:( O'Neill's had Kerry's number since the Nixon Admin used him back in the 70's ... why didn't Kerry make a move to STFU on O'Neill long before he accepted the Dem nomination ? Could have saved the Dems a helluva lot of defensive strategy and opened up time/money to attack the Bush Admin on the REAL issues.
