3. In the bible God did not care for those who claimed to be holier than thou
In fact, they pissed Him off. Obviously, the republican god favors those who claim to be holier than thou. This seems to be persuasive evidence that the republican god is not the biblical God.

7. Yep! God abhored those types. Called them hypocrites. That's why
the thread starter makes a good point. I don't know that, "holier than thou" is the exact phrase we should use. But something along those lines would definately be in order.

4. How about you print out these little gems?
http://www.jesus-institute.org/jesus-parables-teachings/jesus-teachings/jesus-avoidhypocrisy.shtml

"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:5-6)

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves." (Matthew 23:15)

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe (donate) mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others." (Matthew 23:23)

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean." (Matthew 23:25-26)

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." (Matthew 23:27-28)

"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them." (Matthew 23:13-14)

"Whatever you want others to do for you, do so for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." (Jesus quoted by Matthew 7:12)

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (Jesus quoted by John 13:34)

'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' "This is the great and foremost commandment. "And a second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." (Jesus quoted by Matthew 22:37)

Jesus said to Simon Peter a third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Jesus, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep." (Jesus quoted by John 21:17)

"If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you." (Jesus after cleaning the feet of his followers in John 13:13)

"But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward in heaven will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men." (Jesus quoted by Luke 6:35)

"Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many." (Jesus quoted by Mark 10:43)

11. I'm not a Christian, but I do think everyone should read the Bible
So you at least know what is actually in there. Furthermore, it is the basis of western culture and literature. It's hard to fully appreciate or understand much of what has been written without some grounding in the Bible.

6. I like "sanctimonious"
or "sanctimonious high horse" is even better. But "holier-than-thou" is probably more universally understood.
