4. I always hibernate from the Friday after Thanksgiving
until the consumer feeding frenzy is finally over during the second week of January. I buy food. That's it.

Part of it is because I despise crowds. Part of it is because I can't stand crass commercialism. Part of it is because Bush has had me unemployed for 14 months.

5. Works for me,but I've never shopped the day after Thanksgiving-
I always had to work. I guess I really don't count but I wish all of you well.

I'm going to do my bit against consumerism this year by cutting back on gifts and giving the difference to a charity.

6. Is thrift store shopping allowed?
I might do some of that, because there is a great thrift store in Napa, where my folks live, that I like to visit whenever we are there.

But I have no plans to shop at any retail stores or otherwise on Friday. Weather permitting, we're going to take a nice two-mile hike, and look for fresh greenery to make our own Christmas wreaths. I decided I'm not going to buy either a live or dead Christmas tree this year, because I can't afford it. So am going to try to make a couple of really nice wreaths instead.

7. For me, every day is Buy Nothing Day
At least, the longer I go without work, the more it gets to be that way. First I celebrated Buy Nothing Weekends, then Buy Nothing Weeks, now it's getting to be entire Buy Nothing Months -- excepting bulk foods and the mortgage and utilities.

So this won't be any change for me. I've never understood why anyone would want to go out and battle the crowds on that day, anyway -- ugh. :P

11. I May Spend the Day MAKING Yule Presents
Edited on Sun Nov-21-04 06:52 PM by AndyTiedye
Homemade presents always seem to be more appreciated than the store-bought ones anyway.

I NEVER shop the day after Thanksgiving.

That said, we should try to be careful and selective about what
we boycott. If "boycott everything" takes hold in the blue states,
while there's business-as-usual in the red states, guess what
happens to the blue states' economies? Boycott those who deserve it.
Many of us already do, but don't do it blindly. There are a lot of
small businesses that are barely hanging on, and some of them are blue
too.

17. Don't understand logic of buy nothing day
Look, I'm a Socialist, so I ain't exactly a proponent of buying useless shit to pad the pockets of capitalists, yet I really question the logic of Buy Nothing Day. If we stop buying, we're just hurting the economy. All that Buy Nothing Day does is put people out of work. I really think you need to rethink a better way of changing the system.

They wouldn't let me create a new thread to do this, so I'd like to take the opportunity to invite people to listen to, and hopefully call in during my live radio show. Please check it out:

18. I don't understand it either. I know a lot of people who depend on
other people to buy things, so they can feed their families. The first people put out of work during a boycott are the ones who need the work the most. If I need to buy something on Friday, I will.

23. Ok, but the economy hurts us and...
the only way you can really vote these days is with your dollars. If you don't support the corporations that outsource to foreign countries, that abuse the environments of poor countries, that exploit workers in third world countries, etc. you fight against them by spending your money with people that you find do honest business in the U.S., that don't exploit natural resources, and that produce goods that are durable, biodegradable, and that help us be self-sustaining instead of imperialistic. Whew. That's like the longest sentence ever.

Thanks for listening.

I am not planning on buying anything for anyone for Christmas this year, and I am trying to get people not to buy me anything. It is not as if I have any money anyway. This shopping frenzy each year is a gross bastardization of the meaning of any holiday.

I'm also cutting out shopping at Red Businesses year round. I think it is important for us all to get off the consumption treadmill anyway, for besides stretching the earth's limited resources, it just forces people into a cycle of work, spend, debt, work.

I really like the idea people mentioned of homemade gifts for christmas. My parents love to watch the birds from their kitchen window, so this year I will be making them two nesting boxes and a feeder (from some beautiful leftover cedar) to hang on the trees in their back yard.
