America says no to the Bush agenda: A few weeks too late

George W. Bush was quick to claim an electoral mandate despite his narrow popular vote win -- and yet this new New York Times poll shows a majority of Americans, of both red and blue persuasions, are lukewarm about his second term agenda. Among other things, a solid 2/3 majority of Americans think dealing with the deficit is a more important priority than cutting taxes further, as Bush plans. But Dick Cheney would tell them that "deficits don't matter" -- and tax cuts for the rich are his "due," his prize for winning re-election, no matter how destructive they might be. Sorry, America, you may not want to destroy our children's future, but Dick Cheney does, and guess what, you get what you paid for! (Even if you didn't pay for it.)

Or in a twist of the old Colin Powell Pottery Barn rule, they'll break it -- meaning Bush, Cheney, et al -- and we'll buy it. These could be four long years.

1. This makes a mockery of the CNN poll,
That supposedly gives * a 55% approval rating. Yeah right.

4. Duh
The dumb Americans are finally figuring out the "booming economic recovery" doesn't mean anything when the value of the dollar has devaluated 30% since 2001 due to the deficit and expected to dip lower.
Moral values are of little help when you can't afford to eat.

5. It's Going to Be Even Tougher Facing the Wised-Up
It's going to be even tougher facing the wave of wised-up voters who will start coming into Democratic Party precinct meetings and state conventions and keep a straight face. I am going to need power beyond my own resources to keep mum on what I really think of their thinking processes when so many of these people had voted Republican back in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004.

Some friends of mine in 12 step recovery think that the nation as a whole is going to have to hit bottom before enough of the electorate realizes the economic, political, and moral bankruptcy of the Rulin' Dubya Posse and their Banana Republican allies. Unfortunately, we're still a long ways away from bottom and bottom is going to be ugly. Even more unfortunately, so many of us progressives are NOT going to be immune from the effects of right-wing political and economic stupidity.

I hope we're well-fed and healthy enough to enjoy the fun when enraged former dittoheads and Boortz bunnies tar and feather their former heroes.
