If you are thinking about Satellite Radio.....
Hear this,,,,

A broker friend of mine and I got to talking yesterday after we hooked up for our annual post meal with the family nibbling.....

I trust this guy, I have known him since he was in fourth grade, watched him grow up to be a responsible husband and father....

We got to talking about the sorry state of radio here in Cleveland and I mentioned Howard bolting from broadcast to satellite....

I said it would probably F*** up clear channel when Howard legitimizes the whole concept when he goes satellite....

Ho told me that could only be partially true since Clear Channel owns about 10% of XM radio....

Let me repeat this....

CLEAR CHANNEL OWNS 10% of XM radio......

So if you are thinking about getting with the next best thing, satellite radio, stay clear of XM since they will just be a gate keeper for the Republicans and Clear Channel......

4. The battle lines have been drawn
The prior CEO from Viacom is now the head of Sirius....

Ford is Sirius while XM is GM....

No, I think there will, at some point in time, be a way to use one reciever to pick up both, but they will remain competative...

Right now, XM has a large advatage in subscribers....

Look for that to change.....

5. actually i won't look for that change
satellite radio is merely the equivalent of cable TV

if it was my choice I wouldn't have cable TV in my apartment. I don't pay the cable bill (my brother does) so it shouldn't really matter. I've come to really despise all of the news networks. The only way I would pay for cable TV is if I can decide which organizations get my money and which don't.

I have no respect for satellite radio, much the same way that I have no respect for cable TV and bottled water.

6. Most of it just about music...
However, keeping Clear Channel from monopolizing another part of the media is, in my book, aokay....

7. XM has an "American Left" channel
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 08:13 AM by BluegrassDem
I have XM and they both a right wing and left wing political talk channel. I haven't seen anything that would reflect a biased of any sorts. Since people are paying for it, it's a little harder to be biased in satellite radio than for free media. Besides, XM is cheaper!

8. Wait until there is a drop in listeners on broadcast...
Clear Channel should rightly be viewed with suspision in verything and anything that they are involved with.....

10. I got XM to listen to AAR
they put on Ed Schulz during the first two hours of Randi's show. He is fine but I'd rather hear Randi.

At night they do the unthinkable - Alan Freaking Colmes - and the display shows Fox News and the phone number. Colmes has to be about the most irrelevant strawman "liberal" I have ever seen. A real "Uncle Tom" if you will

I am dumping XM for Sirius soon. I was going to wait a year because of the small investment in the equipment, but now I think I'm just going to sell it on eBay. I will be there when Howard gets to Sirius in 2006 (I was a Stern fan when he was on only ONE station - DC101)

9. That's why I bought Sirius.
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 11:47 AM by in_cog_ni_to
Clear channel will eventually turn XM into "Christian Satellite Radio." :( They will end up owning more than 10%. Eventually they will own a majority of stock and then you can hear "Jesus Loves Me" on every station, 24/7.

on edit.

IF you ARE going to buy Sirius Satellite Radio, buy it from Radio Shack! They advertise on Air America. :hi:

11. WRONG... WRONG... WRONG...
CLEAR CHANNEL OWNS 10% of XM radio......
This is ancient history... AT STARTUP Clear Channel owned about 12% of XM STOCK... they divested themselves of it about 18 months ago and now hold about 2% of the stock...

And another Clear Channel note... two of their stations are now AIR AMERICA affiliates...

(this is not a Clear Channel defense, just wanting the FACTS to be out... truth is important)

12. Thanks, Rosco
I was looking for the facts when you posted. I knew the actual figure was 2-3%. And, its non-voting stock from what I hear.

Now, as for XM vs. Sirius. If you just want it for news/talk, I would suggest Sirius. If you are a music fan and want to only hear songs you know, go with Sirius. If you want deeper playlists, go with XM.

14. XM's future...
tx_dem41...

no problem.. I keep hearing that 'CLEAR CHANNEL OWNS XM' rant till it drives me nuts. Up until the beginning of '04, DirecTV (Rupert) owned about 10% of XM stock and they also divested...

Expect some CHANGES at XM in Jan..

I've heard that they are also splitting the 'left' channels into (one fulltime AAR, another 'left' channel). I've got the talk program director's email/fax/direct phone if anyone want's it (it's not a secret, it's on the sig of all his emails) if they want to 'urge' the change...

I will admit.. that right now there is a helluva Sirius deal (free hardware if you pre-pay for a year) and if Sirius had Art Bell, I might consider changing, but if they make the (rumored) changes in Jan-Feb I'll be happy...

16. Thanks for that
My cousins hubby used to be a salesman for XM. High level, setting up the stations that broadcast it. I know his leanings and I know every job he takes seems to have some connection to clear channel crap. When he forst mentioned sat radio several years ago, I made a mental note not to have anything to do w/ it. I never really cared about the numbers, I just knew he was a putz and he had that type of GWB mentality about everything. "He's a west Texas girl," like GWB. Anyway, he is out of this business now, so I hadn't heard much about Clear Channel involvement. Watch out for HDTV though, he is highly involved in that business now! Anyone done any reasearch on that industry they could tell me about?
