Hastert launches a partisan policy
House speaker continues to marginalize Democrats
ANALYSIS
By Charles Babington
Washington Post
Updated: 12:12 a.m. ET Nov. 27, 2004

In scuttling major intelligence legislation that he, the president and most lawmakers supported, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert last week enunciated a policy in which Congress will pass bills only if most House Republicans back them, regardless of how many Democrats favor them.

<snip>
Republicans earlier barred House Democrats from helping to draft major bills such as the 2003 Medicare revision and this year's intelligence package. Hastert (R-Ill.) now says such bills will reach the House floor, after negotiations with the Senate, only if "the majority of the majority" supports them.
<snip>
Republicans "like to talk about bipartisanship," said Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). "But when the opportunity came to pass a truly bipartisan bill -- one that would have passed both the House and Senate overwhelmingly and would have made the American people safer -- they failed to do it."

Hastert criticized
Some congressional scholars say Hastert is emphasizing one element of his job to the detriment of another. As speaker, said Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute, "you are the party leader, but you are ratified by the whole House. You are a constitutional officer," in line for the presidency after the vice president. At crucial times, he said, a speaker must put the House ahead of his party.

This creep is going to be the right hand to the most extreem regime this nation has ever had to deal with. Foreign or domestic.

1. What goes around comes around.
What keeps me sane is thinking about how hard it's going to come around and how much it's going to kick people like Dennis Hastert straight in the ass.

3. The house is the most corrupt part of our government
It was like this when the dems controlled it for 50 years. Then all of those southern white supremecist dems went to the Repuke party and elected assholes like Gingrich, DeLay, and Hastert to run things the same way.

5. This is why I wish that Tom DeLay would run for president...
Dubya can actually be sold to the American people, but I could have so much fun arguing with my GOP friends with a fascist like DeLay or Santorum running for prez.

6. Is this also to make sure
that Dems and a MINORITY of Republicans don't form alliances against the Republican majority?
