This election crises is not all as the media is presenting: Excellent blog article illuminates.
Ukrainian elections... the long rant
Article Here
http://lunogled.blogspot.com/A few scattered observations
i) For the record, both candidates suck.
ii) How many irregularities which OSCE uses to say that Ukraine's
elections are INVALID also apply for the November election in the US?
Read the report and make up your own mind.
iii) The idea that Yushenko is a fighter against corruption is
ludicrous. He was a TOP GUY in the ruling party while the most
corrupt deals were made, by some of his leading supporters
iv) There were huge
anti-Yushenko demonstrations on the Oriental side
of the Ukraine, totally ignored by the media. Funny how a
State-department
financed PR campaign can make or break political protests.
Ukraine is EXTREMELY divided. The oriental side is UNDENIABLY
pro-Yanokovitch and Russia (Russian is spoken by 99% of people
there as a matter of course. Half the reason they support
Yanukhovich is that he promised too make Russian an official
language)
The western side is UNDENIABLY
pro-Nationalist, pro-Yushenko and anti-Russia (ie, they try
to ban public libraries from having Russian books, Universities
from teaching in Russian, etc. All of this is ridiculous, since most
Ukrainians speak Russian better than Ukrainian).
The irregularities affect a very small number of "undecided" voters.
This is actually pretty scary, because it could really degenerate
into ethnic conflict (These are not really ethnicities, but neither
are half the "ethnicities" involved in ethnic conflicts, so who
cares)
v) most important, and TOTALLY overlooked by the US and Canadian
media, as far as I can tell:
The Ukrainian nationalist movement is in general FIERCELY Anti-semitic
and was, 60 years ago, primarily complicit in exterminating most of
Ukrainian Jewish community.
Youshenko's movement is using anti-semitic rhetoric all the way,
and some of it's most influential Ukrainian backers are outright
neo-nazis and Holocaust deniers
(Read the letter by the Oxford professor, as well as this, for examples).
It is simply "unbelievable" (well, it isn't! But it is outrageus) that
the same US
governament, congress and neo-con opinion-makers, who don't mind
seeing Antisemitism wherever it is convenient within the Middle East,
proceed to COMPLETELY IGNORE anti-semitism expressed pretty openly
by a main RECIPIENT OF THEIR AID AND SUPPORT!
