Flu Pandemic Banned by Free Republic
The Free Republic has banned my posts on avian flu (they may have the record for the most misinformation on avian flu on the Internet).

This is not unexpected, since they did the same thing at the beginning of the pandemic at the end of 2003.

The NY Times however, is alive and well and will be publishing on the pandemic tomorrow. Here are some comments on tomorrow's article

2. Probably because they said not enough was being done to stop it
(the pandemic) from happening, and they interpreted that as a criticism of chimpy. That's my guess.

4. The moderators there know darn well that their Repug heros have done ZERO
to prevent this and want to keep the Repug followers on that site in the dark until the Repug leadership has made a public statement or have come to a consensus about how to spin this against some group they hate.

Up to 100 million people may die within weeks if a bird flu pandemic breaks out, a senior World Health Organisation (WHO) official warned on Monday as he urged nations to make urgent preparations to mitigate its spread. A global outbreak is almost certain and even widescale vaccination programmes will not be enough to halt its inexorable advance, the WHO director for the Western Pacific, Shigeru Omi, said in Hong Kong. "The most conservative estimate is that seven to 10 million people would die, but the maximum range will be more -- 50 million or even in the worst case...

Hong Kong May Restrict Bird Slaughter to Combat Flu

Sun Nov 28, 2004 10:37 PM ET HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong said on Monday it may ban shopkeepers slaughtering poultry after world health experts issued strong warnings that the deadly bird flu virus may trigger the next pandemic. Hong Kong scientists have been fighting to end the widespread practice of killing live chickens in markets since 1997, when the H5N1 virus first spread to humans and killed six people in the territory. But strong opposition from the poultry industry has prevented the government from stopping stall holders from selling live chickens and ducks and slaughtering them in front...

The world is on the brink of a major flu epidemic — one that could claim more than a billion lives, the head of the Russian Virology Institute, Academician Dmitry Lvov said at a press conference organized by the RIA-Novosti news agency on Thursday. “Up to one billion people could die around the whole world in six months,” Lvov said. The expert did not give a timeframe for the epidemic, but said that it is highly probable that it will start this year. “We are half a step away from a worldwide pandemic catastrophe,” the academic said. The Russian expert...

Looming pandemic which could kill 10s of millions causing sleepless nights

TORONTO (CP) - The global community of influenza experts is a small circle. These days, it's an exhausted, alarmed one as well. Many influenza authorities are suffering sleepless nights, eyes trained on Asia where they fear a viral monster is readying itself to unleash a perfect storm of flu on the world. Should that happen, what will follow will be a public health disaster that will make SARS seem like child's play, they believe. Between a quarter and a third of the world's population will fall ill, according to new World Health Organization estimates, and one per cent of the...

Bird-flu pandemic is looming: WHO

Bird-flu pandemic is looming: WHO Published on November 27, 2004 The world is hurtling towards a catastrophic avian-flu pandemic since the outbreak's regular cycle is overdue and evidence suggests the virus has undergone substantial genetic change, the World Health Organisation warned yesterday. "Of course, I cannot say when one may occur, but I believe we are closer now to a pandemic than at any time in recent years," said Dr Shigeru Omi, regional director for the Western Pacific region of the WHO at an international conference on bird flu. He was echoing remarks by WHO influenza expert Dr Klaus Stohr...

BANGKOK, Thailand --World Health Organization experts are warning that Asia's bird flu is the most likely candidate to cause the world's next pandemic, with the possibility of as many as 7 million deaths and billions of outbreaks. ``I believe we are closer now to a pandemic than at any time in recent years,'' Shigeru Omi, Western Pacific regional director of WHO, said Friday at a regional meeting about the disease. ``The current outbreak (of avian influenza) in poultry is historically unprecedented in terms of geographical spread and impact,'' he said. ``This virus appears to be not only very resilient, but...

14. Missing Much
It wasn't so much that they were missing stories. It was mostly missing the point or perpetuating misconceptions.

5. The Real Deal on the Ban
The Free Republic claims they banned the posts because because it was promoting Recombinomics - which has the most commentary on avian flu

http://www.recombinomics.com/whats_new.html

However, I was also banned in early 2004 for posting too much (they called it trolling) on avian flu (and the earlier posts contained no links to recombinomics, which didn't exist then).

The real reason is a control of news issue (and control of territory by frequent posters).

Earlier, I also challenged the nonsense posted on the 2001 anthrax attacks being an attempt at blackmail by Saddam Hussein to keep the US from invading Iraq (which is STILL believed by many of the Freepers, even after the invasion).

15. Freepers Going Balistic
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 10:15 PM by pandemic_1918
Knowing that I have been banned, the Freepers can say what they want. They are at 275 posts and counting and 2700 views

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1290201/posts

Most posts are nonsense, to me, or both, since they can now post unchallenged.

Major group think in action.

May have rubbed off on WHO. They are going ballistic in the New York Times over the use of the B word

6. They don't want to hear about the flu.
They want to pretend it's the Rapture when all those people die.

I was banned at the beginning of 2004 for replying to avian flu posts (no links involved). The Free Republic has serious "control" issues on news and information (and this is NOT new).
