Reagan official compares Bush gang to Nazis!

“What Became of Conservatives?” asks Paul Craig Roberts , who served as assistant secretary of the Treasury under President Ronald Reagan. Roberts conservative credentials include serving as associate editor of the Wall Street Journal and as a contributing editor of National Review.

“The conservative movement that I grew up in did not share the liberals’ abiding faith in government. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Now, he warns, “Today it is liberals, not conservatives, who endeavor to defend civil liberties from the state. Conservatives have been won around to the old liberal view that as long as government power is in their hands, there is no reason to fear it or to limit it. Thus, the Patriot Act, which permits government to suspend a person’s civil liberty by calling him a terrorist with or without proof. Thus, preemptive war, which permits the President to invade other countries based on unverified assertions.”

But he cautions, “There is nothing conservative about these positions. To label them conservative is to make the same error as labeling the 1930s German Brownshirts conservative.”

Roberts adds that delusion is the defining characteristic of the Bush administration. The nightmare in Fallujah has led to destabilization of Mosul, fueling a need for more troops—but there are none, he observes. He predicts that the draft will be reinstated—and critics will be arrested for treason and silenced. “Trapped in violence and unable to admit mistake, a reckless administration will escalate,” he foresees, adding that war is pushing the U.S. toward bankruptcy and harming American living standards.

Read this alarming yet compelling piece, then show it to all of your Republican friends. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee—before we all get burned.

1. Paul Craig Roberts is the Last Person I Would Have Expected
to take this turn. Paul O'Neil was always a bit of a maverick. But Roberts was such a flaming supply-sider Reaganite that it's really a shock. I guess he just isn't concerned about career or reputation any longer.

7. My thought, too
Supply-sider. Too bad he didn't see this coming before.

His comments about the Iraq War are spot on.

3. Good old Lew
Yep, the day has come when we liberals link arms with true conservatives and libertarians to defend our way of life against the rampage of the neocons. Watch yer butt, Mr. David Brooks!

21. That's for sure
I don't know why any of the Reaganites should be surprised, if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have what we now have. x(

question this administration, they will be dismissed as "resentful" or "bitter" while Liberal critics are "partisan" and "Pushing their agenda".

No one can win - "Yer either wid' us er agin' us."

12. We should start a section on turncoat Republicans.
This would be a great resource for converting the faithful to our cause. Can someone set that up?

8. A little convulted logic.
Liberals still think that government is the best organization to respond to public, safety and welfare issues. But they have ALWAYS been in favor of civil rights and liberties. They have only intruded on individual rights if there was a public interest involved.

Notice the one thing that is missing: Corporate interest. That's where the Bush Administration has gone wrong.

11. I wonder if Powell will be next...
Now that he's leaving Shrubdom, do you think Colin Powell might have the guts to speak out against this adminstration, or at least this war?

10. Hard To Believe
This is very unlike Roberts. Maybe just maybe he is starting to come to his sense's. I still don't trust him as far as I could throw him. He's definatly not the type to be trusted.

17. Roberts has the "Libertarian" noose around his head, and, won't..
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 07:12 PM by coreystone
be considered to be a Republican. Most Americans "seem" to anoint Republicans with "conservatism". It doesn't matter that a "few" Republicans stole the name. As long as they have an R next to their name, it is still the GOP.

I could sit here all night long and print off so much of Roberts' writings on his "conservatism" to make me sick. But, I could take that into a fellow I work with for him to read, and, still, he would not connect the dots.

I am not even sure if Barry Goldwater were still alive and published the exact same article, if any of these people would reconsider their perspective. Many of them have so programmed!

19. Sorry. No sale. Reagan was just like these criminals.
He's the one who started this crap by deregulating everything, most notably the FCC, which allowed the GOP to own our media. Reagan was a FU just like BushCo.
