The "Republan" Party
I just read the latest Olberman blog at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240 and something he said in the following paragraph got me thinking:

"As to the audit of the perception of conflict of interest in Blackwell’s other role as Honorary Co-Chair of the Bush-Cheney Ohio Campaign, he seemed less definitive. 'We have a bi-partisan system in Ohio where the Hamilton County Chairman of the board of elections, Tim Burke, is also the Democrat chairman of the Democrat party in that county.' I’ll pause the quote here to note that said party does business as the Democratic Party and the Republicans’ obsession with that little ‘ic’ has always seemed peevish to me, even when it’s coming out of John McCain’s mouth. Blackwell continued: 'The same for Dayton. The Democrat Chairman is the Chairman of the Board of Elections in Montgomery County.'"

I'm talking about the whole "Democrat Party" thing. The other issues raised in the blog are being discussed in other threads.

If they're so obsessed with that "ic" maybe we should oblige them. Whenever someone refers to the "Democrat Party" we should also drop an "ic" and refer to them as the "Republan Party"! A bunch of us should write to Keith and suggest this.

1. I'm not familiar with the ic controversy
Is the suggestion that the Dem's are not really democratic--in terms of supporting democracy?

2. I'm guessing on this...
but I think it's that they don't like the implication that we are more democratic than they are. We are of course but they'd rather the public didn't realize it, so they play their usual games with language in an attempt to misdirect people's thinking away from the obvious.

5. I think it is traced back to Newt Gingrich
back in 1994 or 96?

4. I don't think there's any thought behind it
except that it gets up some Democrats' noses. Just the petty glee that comes from being deliberately obstinate.

And how fitting! We never had a democracy, as the the "Republans" were so fond of pointing out during impeachment.

The Constitution says we live in a Republic. However; if fraud, voter intimidation and vote suppression are winked at by the government we don't even have that.

So, by maintaining the the label "Republican" they are misrepresenting themselves.

8. lately I've heard media pundits say we live in a republic, not a democracy
usually in the context of referendums and amendments voted on by the public. The implication is that direct democracy is anarchy, and representative democracy more civilized.
I find this discussion particular odd during a time when we have a foreign policy predicated on spreading through the barrel of a gun the gospel of democracy around the world.

10. pa28, good thought
but I wasn't really thinking that far. I just thought that it would illustrate the ludicrousness of the way they play with language. Everytime they play one of these Orwellian word games we should echo it back in a ridiculous over the top way. It would make the game that much more obvious.
