Poll question: If you were chosen for the draft would you...
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 04:41 AM by socordsx
I noticed the "if they outlawed abortion" poll and thought I would start another one. If its out of line go ahead and delete it, I'm still kinda new.

1. I've discussed this with my son...
...no way in hell. Bush can clone some troopers, because neither me nor my own will fight and die for his lies and the profit of his friends and family. Bush can march into hell all on his own.

14. Clones are still people
what if they didn't want to go either? Anyway, you'd still have to wait for them to grow up... ;)

3. I thought about this last night
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 04:51 AM by Winamericaback
and finally figured out how to get out of a draft if they ever do decide to draft women. Its a scary way but I can always have children earlier then planned. They wouldn't draft a pregnant woman would they? Of course my fiance could still be drafted, so I'll probably forgoe the pregnancy theory and head to England.

But as a standby I can flush my birth control pills if needed.

Its pathetic that we each have to come up with ways not to fight in our governments forced genocide.

4. There would be no way in hell I would go
I would have no problem defending my country if it was for a right and just cause. There is no way in hell I would lay my life on the line on behalf of chimpy and his crusade.

Its become a topic of conversation at home for me. I'm about a year or so from graduating college so I'm eligible, my brother is about to turn 18 and my sister isnt far behind either. None of us are going and I dont care what we gotta do.

5. I'd have to bite the bullet . . .
. . . if chosen for the draft--in order to put on a good show for the Bushkis down the road--because, at MY age, greetings from Uncle Sam would have to be a mistake!

6. I'd hope for a community service option
I'd serve my country, but would mount a conscience objector defense to armed service.

7. I would go
But before I left I would visit every republican I knew and make them see the result of their vote. I would be sure to point out that their vote is what was causing me to be shipped out against my will.
"It was YOUR vote that allowed me to be drafted!"
"and when its YOUR turn, dont you dare run and hide!"

I would be pissed off to the point of rage, but I would take one for the team

10. like they care
As long as it isn't them or their own kids. I've heard some Republicans say the most heartless things about the soldiers and their families: " they signed up didn't they? it was their own choice, etc..."
Combine that with the band aids they wore at their convention to ridicule Kerry's military service, that shows how much they really support our troops.

8. The point we tried to make in the 60's was
no one should participate in illegal, immoral wars. They can't hold them if no one shows up.

9. I would wake up and realize. . .
it was a bad dream.

There will never be a draft in this country. It would make it politically impossible to go to war, and would be much less effective than our professional armed forces. The finest in the history of the world.

11. but what about a skills draft?
which is being discussed? as a person who falls into that category, i've actually had to think about this quite a lot. my answer is of course to let them know my girlfriend and i not only enjoy pot daily, but that we've got serious, violent issues with male authority figures....but seriously, i think i'll go to jail before i join this service of slaves for bush's oil wars.

15. I guess I'm lucky
I have over thirteen years of service, complete with two Honorable Discharges, and I now close to 50 years of age. So, if those dimwits at the local draft board still want me, I guess I'd go. I doubt I would pass the physical; and I would sing a bar of Alice's Restaurant at every station along the line at the MEPS station, especially at the psychological station.

19. If I were of the age whereas I would be “drafted”, at this point…
I would “book out”, ASAP! I wouldn’t draw any attention in my overt behavior. I would immediately investigate all options, countries, and a plethora of considerations.

Someone who used to be very close to me assisted a college graduate during the Viet Nam period, who had lost his “deferment”, and, was subsequently drafted, cross into the Canadian border.

During the period of this country in which we were actively involved with forcing the young Americans to travel to Viet Nam in the “sixties and early seventies”, I had educational deferments. At the point where I knew that the “military” could offer me a “trip to Europe and Educational benefits”, I took a chance! I enlisted! I am what is called a “Viet Nam Era” veteran. I played a game of chance. It was March of 1973. The US was “HONORABLY” disengaging our participation in Viet Nam. I was assigned to HQ’s of the US Army Europe. A great assignment in Heidelberg, Germany. I worked as a “Assignment clerk” in the Personnel area of that Command during 1974 through 1976. As much as I deplored the whole military routine, I loved living in Germany during that time.

Many times I would travel around Europe for weeks at a time during my allocated leave periods. Once, I traveled to Sweden for about three weeks. I remember in Stockholm, Malmo, and other areas, that there were a significant number of Americans who had a knowledge of the Swedish language who did not seem to be “active” military. I always wondered whether any of them had left the military or had bypassed the draft under conditions which would have been considered “inappropriate” by our government.

Maybe, not directly related to the original post, but, a brief reaction to it!

:-)
