Bush foes promise peaceful, vigorous protest

Thousands of protesters will march from the Grand Parade to Pier 21 in Halifax on Wednesday morning, carrying placards and wearing black arm bands to protest against U.S. President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq, organizers say.

Tamara Lorincz of the Halifax Peace Coalition stressed they want the demonstration to be "absolutely peaceful." In fact, she said, she is bringing her five-month-old baby.

"We are ordinary Haligonians who believe in peace," she said at a news conference Monday.

Well-known activist Muriel Duckworth, 96, plans to lead the protest in a wheelchair. She is a member of Canadian Voice of Women for Peace.

Short speeches and a moment of silence are planned and protesters will wear black arm bands or ribbons to "mourn the loss of innocent civilian lives in Afghanistan and Iraq," Ms. Lorincz said.

When Mr. Bush gives his speech, the demonstrators plan to turn their backs to him.

Ms. Lorincz said the coalition has been inundated with phone calls and e-mails.

"There are busloads of people coming from all over the Maritimes," she said.

She wouldn't say exactly how many protesters are expected Wednesday, but she did say there is more support for this protest than one in February 2003. Despite freezing cold, that protest drew about 5,000 people demonstrating against the war in Iraq, she said. A media report pegged the crowd at more than 1,500.
