Church and State
We all know, thanks to Rush and his ilk, that the phrase 'separation of church and state' appears nowhere in the Constitution.

How exactly do we (liberals, progressives, etc.) view the concept? Was the intent at the founding to simply prevent the establishment of a state church or to completely rid government of religion?

My opinion is that the government and its 'appendages' should not mention religion in any way. Seems basic to me that it is not the place of government to discuss relgion but I guess it is not that simple to some. Prayer in school is fine so long as an 'appendage' of the state (a teacher, principal) does not lead it qua his/her role as a part of government. Saying "Under God" in the pledge is fine with me so long as it is not indoctrinated by the government, as it is now. It seems that DUers won't disagree too much with my opinions.

However, what about a police detective wearing a cross necklace on the job? Maybe that is him expressing religion qua himself and not as a government person.

Thoughts?

2. saying "under god"... IS NOT OK..!! keep your god out of my life, and all

things that all the cults of Abraham represent, judgement day Duality, inherent conflict of good and evil..and abhorrence of the shades of grey necessary for all to be inclusive. Religion is taking over the government.. and i now hope the corporations soon take it back..!!!

I went to the Unemployment office and the woman there spent half my time asking me what church i went to, what church my mother went to.. my wife went to.. and was suspecious when i did not give the "RIGHT" answers, , she made phone calls to church people asking questions about my mothers church..ETC/ETC/ETC/ETC.. then told me i should go to her church..!!!!!...

it is NOT a benign institution, it is DANGEROUS to have religion in such an incestuous relationship with government.

I feel more threatened every day!! these Evangelicals are not benign, not tolerant, and are not going to give up till they run the schools, the government and everybody's lives... where i live it is sufficating me.. it is everywhere all the time, you cant get free of the extremists, they are always acting suspicious about why you dont go to church..they just dont get it and dont give up. and it is comming after you, wake up.

3. Perhaps I should clarify on the "Under God" thing...
Anyone can say it personally. Go ahead and say what you want. HOwever, I don't want it as the 'official' pledge - no God please:)
