18. Oh what a night! (The Dells)
These have been the most exciting days since the Clinton victory OMG way back when.

It has been a joy to watch John Edwards come into his own - and to have other people finally see it, and be moved.

There have been some rough days on this board - man last spring and summer were brutal. But I feel we will all come together in the end.

This is the best day the Democratic party has had in a long time - the first of many to come.

Our time is now.

6. It's funny. I was prepared to be thrilled if he got 20%
which still would have been enough for third place. He's within 5 of kerry. I'm over the moon.

Should I be upset he didn't win? I'm not. I feel like it's not about the win here. It's about the right arc and this is a great start.

I really hope the debate is between Clark, Kerry and Edwards. That''d be a great debate.

Also couldn't help but notice: no black faces in Iowa.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Kerry's 5% lead in SC and TN and CA and NY.

What a pleasent surprise! I am glad to see hard work and lack of name-calling can be rewarded. It is nice to have a plethora of great candidates to chose from. I know I will work hard for anyone but Bush. I hope you will to should Edwards not proceed to the nomination.

but I think IA has a really small black population. I think that within a month it will be down to 4 candidates. A lot depends on NH.

Kerry leads by 5% in New York?
So that's where all the Lieberman people went. As a member of Howard Dean's considerable following in Upstate NY, I congratulate Sen. Edwards on his close second-place finish. I certainly didn't expect it. It couldn't happen to a better guy. :-)

This is who you want in a foxhole with you. You are the best, AP. Thanks for keeping the flame burning, when some of us wavered. And you always had those FABULOUS pictures - which were instant buck-ups for the flagging spirit.

Thank you AP for posting JRE's latest ad, which epitomizes the hope of his campaign.

Thanks, Skinner for giving us a thread.

Thanks John Edwards, for giving us a smile, a hope, and another cramp in my hands - writing letters to NH starting tomorrow.

20. Congratulations From A Clark Backer
I had a feeling that Edwards might be in for a strong showing once the Des Moines Register backed him.

Since Edwards was the first candidate I heard of for this election (brought to my attention by a friend of mine who has been working furiously for Dean in New Hampshire for the last six months), outside of Wes Clark I've always retained an affinity for John Edwards.

After hearing him speak four times over the last couple of weeks, I'm a believer. Screw all that noise about him being too inexperienced or too young; he's ready.

Many good choices for our party...congratulations Edwards camp!

45. Fantastic!
John had a great showing on (I believe it was) Face the Nation yesterday, he stressed how he was going to run a clean campaign. He had clear coherent answers and was relentlessly on message as to how Bush's polices have been horrendous for America.

With this kind of showing John dosn't need a strong showing in Dean's or Kerry's backyard (New Hampshire). Super Tuesday will be the true test for him.

55. GREAT GREAT showing by Edwards
He absolutely came out of nowhere (as far as the polls knew). About ten days ago, his campaign appeared to be going nowhere. Now, he came pretty close to pulling off a victory in Iowa. (not in South Carolina, or Oklahoma, but IOWA)
This was a huge "victory" for Edwards. It will give him tons of momentum going into New Hampshire, so he'll probably have a good showing there. Then the race heads to his backyard.
I'm starting to think that Edwards is the man to beat right now. I'm leaning Clark since Gephardt dropped out, but Edwards, and Kerry have both impressed the hell out of me this past week.

Congratulations to Edwards from a Kerry supporter. I want Kerry to win the nomination but I would not be upset to see Edwards as the nominee! Edwards is a great man and I'm glad he had a great showing with a close second in Iowa.

Congrats to Edwards! :-)

Huzzah to John Edwards and his supporters on their phenomenal finish in Iowa! I had the opportunity to attend one of his NH town meetings and I was impressed then, even moreso now.

Great work!

And to all who volunteered their time and effort to his campaign, thanks for making this primary so exciting!

I love Dennis, and in an ideal world, he would be my candidate of choice. However, we live in a far from perfect world and I think that perhaps John Edwards is a man that is perfect for this time in the world.

He gives me hope. Ill be calling to find out what I can do to volunteer tomorrow. Kerry is my 2nd choice. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat if he got the nomination, but I am so glad to see this higher then expected caucus result for Edwards. With effort, we can push ahead and take NH. Onward and upward, my friends.

134. Don't let go of that Kucinich ticket.
I hope this doesn't violate the rules for this thread, but the only supporters I haven't tried to convince to switch are Kucinich supporters.

I don't know if you read the post weeks ago -- some K supporter said he was ready to be convinced to switch. I said sticking with Kucinich was the way for the best Dem to win even if it isn't Kucinich. What happened last night makes me think I was prescient. I still feel the same way. Hold that Kucinich ticket, just like that supporter on the CSPAN caucus last night. Don't let go.

I can make the argument for Edwards over Kerry and Clark, but the best argument for Edwards over Kucinich is to stick with Kucinich because it's people like Kucinich for whom Edwards is fighting, and Kucinich is fighting for a world in which there can be more people like Edwards.

Both Edwards and Kerry surprised me. I'm a Dean supporter, but Edwards was the first that intrigued me. He works a crowd nearly as well as Clinton and is fabulous in Town Hall Meetings. I just didn't understand why his campaign didn't take off. Well he proved tonight how he's gotten to where he is. I'd be perfectly happy if he proved to be our candidate for President and if he wins the nomination I'll be glad to support him and contribute to his campaign. I just wish he had opted out of matching funds, that's my only worry.

I think we're all the winners tonight. I see great hope in the Iowa turnout that Democrats are going to send * packing back to Crawford in November.

113. Congratualtions to Edwards
I feel that I have won in both cases, as Edwards had become my second choice, if my own candidate had not won.

Edwards has spoken about things that all but one other candidate has candidate has mentioned, and he has done that more often. This is the obligation of a nation as rich and great as ours to look after the needs of the poor, but also, Edwards has been the cnadidate to speak most often about the obligation to help the disabled, and assist them in leading a life with dignity and in comfort, and to help them find work if they are willing and able. It has been hard for me to support another candidate, as I am disabled, and have noted the lack of mention of the disabled by most of the other candidates.

For my part, I would be just as ecstatic about Edwards becoming the Democratic nominee, as would be for my own candidate.

Edwards character and compassion has shone through over the past few weeks, more than ever, and this evening in his speech, he showed the true qualities that make a great candidate.

Congratualtions to all Edwards and all of his supporters.

The first time I recall having noticed Edwards was when he spoke on the Senate floor about the voting problems in Florida in 2000, and all of my friends remember tonigh as Edwards came in so well in Iowa, that I said on that day, that someday, that Edwards guy is going to be president of the United States.

This is a very, very good start.

Congratualtions again.

I am going to meet John Edwards today!

I was really impressed by Edwards on Larry King - when doofus Bob Woodward from the Washington Post asked him - tell us your mess--age, in a nutshell, boiled down - what is your mess-age going up against President Bush.

Edwards launched into a great response - spelling out his basic agenda. He wasn't going to let Woodward cut him off.

128. Question For Edwards Supporters
I absolutely don't want to bring negative spins to this thread. I'm having trouble deciding whether to support Edwards or Kerry. I think they would each make a fine candidate.

Can someone tell me, without attacking Kerry, what significant political differences you see between the candidates? And then why do you support Edwards' position?

Thanks.

but maybe someone else can articulate a response.

Also, why not visit the websites of the candidates and decide for yourself?

Edwards' platform has been well articulated from the start, and he seems open to refinement.

I would be pleased to support Kerry if he is our nominee.

141. Well, JRE looks good on camera.
His southern accent is as smooth as 12 year old Bourbon, and he's positive and upbeat. Not as 'fired up' as Howard Dean, and some think that helped him in IA.

I understand he was a formidable trial attorney before becoming a senator. Maybe the Pubbies can spin that, but at the end of the day, I believe people recognize that the GOP version of 'tort reform' means destroying people's rights in favor of Big Business.

Both supported the war in Iraq. Whether they both still do is another debate (I don't know), but if that really bothers you, then support somebody like Howard Dean. It really bothers me, but as tight as this thing has become, if JRE were to win the nomination, I'd still carry his water because he declined (or so I'm told) to join in the internecine mudslinging that has gone on in the past couple of months. Maybe this is because he's been the dark horse up until now, but it still says something to me. If I were to point to a real difference between Edwards and Kerry, that would be the first thing I'd think of, that he saved his mud for Bush.

My $0.02.

131. I love John Edwards!
I'm so proud of his showing. He is my # 2 choice, behind Kucinich. Edwards is such a nice guy and shares many of my populist views. Congratulations to him and all his supporters.

135. Congrats Edwards!
I am so glad other people finally, just in the nick of time, saw what us Edwards supporters saw in him from the beginning!

A man of integrity, hope, and intelligence! And a common-sense, comprehensive plan for putting this country back on the right track.

Go Edwards!

138. Congrats to Sen. Edwards -- my *very close* second choice...
I am going with Wes Clark first, but I think John Edwards if a fine candidate too, and I am supporting both the Clark and Edwards campaigns.

Edwards and his supporters did a masterful job in Iowa, and I wish them well in New Hampshire!

Best to all -- :toast:

139. Republicans should now be afraid of Edwards.
Edwards is the only candidate that has a way to win the south and the west from the republicans.

142. I'm So Excited
I'm a first time poster, long time watcher - and I was so excited about John after I read his book, got on his website and met him and his wife. I truly appreciated the fact that he came to Iowa and visited all 99 counties and took time to listen to the concerns of people like me. After meeting him, I talked my Mother, who is 67 years old, into going out to her first caucus (shame on her, I know), in support of John after she read his booklet. I was cheering all the way home from the caucus listening to the results. His Time is Now!
