some great quotes from history. some ideas are timeless!!
Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives. John STUART MILL 1806-1873, British Philosopher, Economist

The despotism of custom is everywhere the standing hindrance to human advancement. John STUART MILL 1806-1873, British Philosopher, Economist

To be conservative requires no brains whatsoever. Cabbages, cows and conifers are conservatives, and are so stupid they don't even know it. All that is basically required is acceptance of what exists. Colin Welch

All conservatives are such from personal defects. They have been effeminated by position or nature, born halt and blind, through luxury of their parents, and can only, like invalids, act on the defensive. Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803-1882, American Poet, Essayist

To correct the evils, great and small, which spring from want of sympathy and from positive enmity among strangers, as nations or as individuals, is one of the highest functions of civilization. ABRAHAM LINCOLN 1809-1865, Sixteenth President of the USA

What is conservatism? It is not adherence to the old and tried, but against the new and untried? ABRAHAM LINCOLN 1809-1865, Sixteenth President of the USA

"I love my country too much to be a nationalist."
- Albert Camus, writer, philosopher, Nobel laureate (1913-1960)

"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."
- Aldous Huxley, novelist (1894-1963)

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind... And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded with patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader, and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."
-- William Shakespeare in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."
--Theodore Roosevelt

The liberaly educated person is one who is able to resist the easy and preferred answers, not because he is obstinate but because he knows others worthy of consideration. Allan Bloom 1930-1992, American Educator, Author

Of all the varieties of virtues, liberalism is the most beloved. Aristotle BC 384-322, Greek Philosopher

The essence of the liberal outlook lies not in what opinions are held, but in how they are held: instead of being held dogmatically, they are held tentatively, and with a consciousness that new evidence may at any moment lead to their abandonment. Bertrand Russell 1872-1970, British Philosopher, Mathematician, Essayist

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and
causes me to tremble for the safety of my country.. Corporations have been
enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the
money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working
upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few
hands and the Republic is destroyed."

-ABRAHAM LINCOLN, November 12, 1864

3. Some more
"As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality." - George Washington

5. almost forgot Mr. Limbaugh....brilliant!!
"And now the liberals want to stop President Reagan from selling chemical warfare agents and military equipment to Saddam Hussein, and why? Because Saddam 'allegedly' gassed a few Kurds in his own country. Mark my words. All of this talk of Saddam Hussein being a 'war criminal' or 'committing crimes against humanity' is the same old thing. LIBERAL HATE SPEECH! And speaking of poison gas . . . I SAY WE ROUND UP ALL THE DRUG ADDICTS AND GAS THEM." - Rush (oxycontin) Limbaugh, Nov. 3, 1988

what a moron.

7. words of a nazi 1946
"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Hermann Goering, April 18, 1946, while awaiting the Nuremberg trials.

8. Thanks and more...
I love quotes!

I've been looking for the Goerring quote that ztn posted for a long time! Thanks!

Here are some that I've found...

~~~Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river.
Nikita Khrushchev (1894 - 1971)
~~~On account of being a democracy and run by the people, we are the only nation in the world that has to keep a government four years, no matter what it does.
Will Rogers (1879 - 1935)

~~~Democracy consists of choosing your dictators, after they've told you what you think it is you want to hear.
Alan Corenk
This one might be the most applicable (for lack of a better word).
~~~Beware lest in your anxiety to avoid war you obtain a master.
Demosthenes (384 BC - 322 BC)

14. "The death of Lincoln was a disaster...
"The death of Lincoln was a disaster. I fear that foreign bankers with their craftiness and tortuous tricks will entirely control the exuberant riches of America and use it to systematically corrupt modern civilization. They will not hesitate to plunge the whole of (humanity) into war and chaos in order that the earth shall become their inheritance."
- Chancelor Otto Von Bismarck

"Whoever controls the volume of money in any country is absolute master of all industry and commerce."
- President James Abram Garfield (assasinated)

"The modern banking system manufactures money out of nothing. The process is perhaps the most astounding piece of sleight-of-hand that was ever invented. Banking was conceived in iniquity, and was born in sin. The Bankers own the Earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create deposits and with the flick of the pen, they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take it (the power to create deposits) away from them, and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear, and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But if you wish to remain the slaves of Bankers, and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create deposits."
- President of The Bank of England Sir Josiah Stamp, at the University of Texas, 1920

"The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the large centers has owned the government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson. History depicts Andrew Jackson as the last truly honorable and incorruptible American President."
- President Franklin D. Roosevelt

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron."
- President Dwight D. Eisenhower

"We tell the people what they need to know, not what they want to know."
- Frank Sesno, CNN

"News is what someone wants to suppress. Everything else is advertising."
- Rubin Frank, NBC

"The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists."
- President J Edgar Hoover

16. This one is scary
"The national government will maintain and defend the foundations on which the power of our nation rests. It will offer strong protection to Christianity as the very basis of our collective morality. Today Christians stand at the head of our country. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit. We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press-- in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of LIBERAL excess during the past years." Adolf Hitler

17. NAUSEA!!
I tell ya. It's amazing how history shows us the errs and pitfalls of our human ways. Yet, when we clearly begin to turn into what we hate, many of us fail or refuse to notice it's even happeming, ie RIGHT WINGERS!

It sounds like an urban legend quote. I'd run and check into it now, but I'm on dial up in the boonies tonight so googling is torturous.

18. Oh that H. L. Mencken!
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)

19. Your Shakespeare Quote (Caesar) has been debunked over and over
This is not a quotation from Shakespeare, as can be easily seen from the language and meter, nor is it a quotation from Caesar himself. It is an Internet hoax that many have fallen for, most notably Barbra Streisand. And, while the response of many is that it's a good thought, that doesn't justify posting it as Shakespeare.
