Official Thread for CLARK supporters and well-wishers ONLY
Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 10:05 PM by Skinner
This is the official thread for Clark supporters and well-wishers to discuss Clark, free of disruption. I know your guy didn't participate in Iowa, but I thought you might want your own thread too.

If you are not a Clark supporter or a well-wisher, please do not post in this thread. The purpose of this thread is for disruption-free discussion among Clark supporters. Any negative posts by opponents will be delted by the moderators. We will open up separate threads where supporters of the other candidates can interact without disruption from opponents.

75. Clark and Dole
There's a video of it here: http://www.us4clark.com/mediaclips.html

It's the Larry King appearance on 1-19.

Basically, Bob Dole was taking shots at Wes, saying he'd been knocked "from a general down to a colonel." Clark had control of the conversation and handled it very well -- Dole really lost that exchange.

9. Yes...I am seeing that with a lot of my fellow Clark supporters...
I don't think that there will be animosity on DU between the Clark, Kerry, and Edwards camps because we all could crossover and vote for the other without disappointment.

Dean on the other hand would have been painful. :-)

10. I disagree
Kerry will get a bump after this but even if we finish 3rd in NH, we will still do well in the following primaries.

This is a wide-open race but I still believe that Clark will take the nomination.

41. You're right
Iowa put the skids on Dean and gave Kerry a bump but I still believe Clark is strong in NH and based on his presence here in SC today and the events he attended, he has the momentum in the south.

We're planning a big fundraiser for him next week gearing up for the Feb 3rd SC primary. The responses to the nearly 1,000 invitations sent have been highly favorable.

As I talk to people, I am finding that everyone has a favorite, often different Democrat but the one needling issue is electability and that's where I see resounding support for Clark. Those of us who feel disenfranchised in southern/sunbelt states see Clark as our best hope against Bush.

He was dynamite at a Democratic breakfast here this morning and the local Clark campaign is well organized. Pray for 2nd place in NH* and victory in SC.

* 2nd place seems to be the NH charm: Bush 41 came in 2nd to Pat Buchanan in 1988, Clinton came in 2nd to Paul Tsongas in 1992, and Bush 43 came in 2nd to John McCain in 2000

50. Independent Voters to Clark
I think the Independent voters will now swarm to Clark instead of Dean. Their are way more independent voters in NH than Democrats and I think this will come down to electability and most will view Clark as more electable than Kerry. Calling Clark a Republican actually may help him. If not then Clark will still beat Kerry on Feb. 3rd in states like South Carolina, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Here in New Mexico all we know is Dean and Clark and the absentee ballotts have mostly already ben cast.

I am a Clark supporter first, but a Kerry and Edwards supporter second. I will be glad to vote for any of the three in November.

I am glad that Kerry AND Edwards surfaced first and second in Iowa. I hope Clark, Kerry, and Edwards supporters can treat each other civilly--don't foresee a problem...

Do y'all think the three camps can coincide peacefully in the upcoming weeks? I am hopeful :-)

I've never seen any Edwards or Kerry people slamming our man, and vice versa. I can easily see all three of them making a good backbone for an excellent administration.

Just imagine:

Clark as Pres.

Kerry as VP.

Edwards as AG.

That could be a VERY beautiful administration.

82. Agreed.
The barbs may not come from Kerry directly, but they're being thrown. I loved when Chris Matthews personally took on former governor Shaheen on her voting record - she looked pretty pathetic. It's truly a shame because she's a fine politician and I thought she made a foolish attack on Clark.

More flyers will be distributed, more allegations about being a Republican will be made and more questioning on his position on the war in Iraq will be lobbed. What really matters is how Clark handles it - firmly, directly and like a gentleman.

is that the polls the pundits and the media do not have the power to annoint our candidate.

It will be interesting to see where those in NH and other places who were soft on Dean will flock to. I still think this is wide open and that Clark will do very well, especially in the South. I really don't see Kerry doing that well in the South.

I can see Clark coming in second in NH - to Kerry. That will be interesting indeed.

31. This makes New Hampshire even more crucial
I think Dean has to win NH to survive, but Clark or Kerry can come in second and still be very viable candidates. Edwards only has to wait for South Carolina.

I'd have to say Clark's decision to skip the Iowa caucuses and focus on NH is looking a lot smarter in view of tonight's results. A win by Clark in NH and second place finish by Kerry there would leave them and Edwards as the three still standing. It's a four person race right now - it's far too early to count Dean out.

Thanks Iowa - I feel that race got started for real tonight!

This gives Edwards a jump in the south but I don't think that he will go shead of Clark in NH. I would have thought that Dean automatically would do well since he is from the North East and Kerry to do well because he is from Mass. but look at Gephart he did not do well in Iowa and he is from MO.

49. This could play any number of ways
Dean's crushing defeat could cost him votes in NH, but where those votes go is anybody's guess. Or, Dean may not fade in NH, seeing as how he has an even better ground-op in that state than in Iowa. Clark is less fervently anti-war than Dean, but he could win over some Dean supporters who might be having second thoughts. On the other hand, Kerry's win could come at Clark's expense, seeing as how many Clark voters in NH are ex-Kerry voters. They may now take a second look. Edwards may or may not surge in NH, but I would expect him to get a bounce in SC and TN, though it may fizzle out by Feb. 3rd. Then there is the Gephardt voters: those 2-4% of NH Gephardt voters will likely be up for grabs between Clark and Kerry. There are more possible scenarios here than in the NFL playoff picture in Week 15 of the football season.

51. I'm hopeful but a bit worried
about how much momentum this will give Edwards and Kerry. There has been so much back & forth between Deanies and Clarkies - worries me that we won't get Dean's drop offs. (Although if they are truly anti-IWR and pragmatic then we SHOULD get them.) But Edwards could do well on Feb 3rd. That's my concern.

This was a damn good night!
It bodes well for the public's ability to choose an electible
candidate. Frankly, of the field in Iowa, I agree with their
choices.

And who is the *most* electible candidate of them all?
That's riiiiiight.
Wesley Clark.
Now it's his turn.

And starting tomorrow he's gonna be all over the place,
while everyone else is regrouping and traveling.

And good signs tonight (granted from watching CNN,
so take it with a grain of skeptism):

-They're mentioning General Clark constantly.
How will this impact Clark?! (The love a horserace.)
They don't even bother to mention Lieberman.

-Their commentators just got thru saying that the veteran
vote made a huge difference, *the* difference, in Iowa.
Ahem...

68. Clark is the most electable candidate for the GE
And he is getting better with time. His numbers with women are weaker than other candidates, but as they get to know him most of them will like him.

He will soar in Florida in the GE and will win in other hotly contested border states.

Congratulations, however, to Kerry and Edwards supporters. I would happily and enthusiastically fall behind your guy if he gets the nomination.

Best wishes to Gep supporters, whose candidate has loyally stood with the unions during his entire career.

67. That was good, but his performance against Fox News's Assman was better
It doesn't compare to the way Clark took Assman to the woodshed on Fox last month.

80. It shouldn't compare
Fox was trying to twist Clark's words to create news, very ugly media manipulation that must be confronted when it happens. Dole was merely politics as usual, trying to paint Clark into a corner where he would have to admit that his campaign was in trouble or some other such nonsense. Dole IS a politician, not a supposedly "objective" member of the media.

I actually thought Clark was a Little bit too over the top with Dole. I think he scores more points when he intelligently spars with another politician, rather than talk right by him with his own message. Just my take, no biggie.

83. You summed it up.
That's what I'm trying to say, Clark should fight back but not go over the top. Last night w/ Dole he was pressing, pushing, trying to hard - and it concerns me.

He has to keep a cool head when attacked and appear strong and on point.

61. Don't be suprised
If Clark finishes third in NH. Third would be damned good, considering he's running against two from the neighborhood.

Don't count out Dean in NH. It seldom is the same as Iowa.

Kerry will be on a roll, but if he pulls out that "Clark is a Republican" crap, he'll look weak.

Our bullet train leaves the station on Feb. 3rd.

I was an Edwards supporter before Clark entered and I would be very happy to vote for either Edwards or Kerry if Clark doesn't get the nomination.

70. I wonder how the Iowa bounce will affect NH.
I'm worried that if Kerry and Edwards keep their momentum into NH, it may put Clark down to third. I think we really need to come in the top three there to have a chance at this. Let's keep our eyes on the polls for the next few days. If we come in the top three and then win SC, Clark will be the next President of the US. (Of course, I'd be very happy with a President Kerry or President Edwards as well.)

74. Well
Edwards is way behind in NH and only has a week to make it up. Unless the same thing happens there that happened in IA (fast, late surge), it will likely be Kerry and Clark, in some combination, going 1-2 in New Hampshire. In the last poll, Edwards only had about 8% to Clark's 20%. Dean's poor showing and post-caucus tirade should cause his numbers to drop.

77. Well wisher weighing in here...
Being Canadian, I cannot vote for Wesley Clark but I do see him as the strongest candidate to beat Bush. He has the foreign affairs credentials to neutralize Bush on what Karl Rove will try to make Bush's strength, the safety of the US and the "war" on terror. I have also looked at Clark's domestic policies and am very impressed. New Hampshire is going to be VERY interesting indeed!

86. what iowa showed us.
my take on iowa is that the country, or at least the "heartland", is looking for someone strong on the military issue to go up against awol. i think iowa got hinky on dean at the last minute because they fear that rove will destroy dean on that issue. that being said, if that is the water temp, then the pool looks mighty fine for mr. clark.

clark is way ahead in az so far. what is interesting to me is that a nader voter and a bush voter (circa 2000) in my office are both in agreement about clark. they say they would vote for him in nov if he is the nominee.
