Eliot Spitzer announces run for NY Governor
"Eliot Spitzer, the New York state attorney general who has built a nationwide reputation as an aggressive pursuer of white collar crime, said today he is running for governor.

Mr. Spitzer borrowed a page from another Democratic candidate, Howard Dean, who made an unsuccessful run for president, by announcing on his Website that he will be a gubernatorial candidate.

"I'm running for governor," Mr. Spitzer said on www.spitzer2006.com, in an entry he titled "Eliot's Blog." "I want to fix what's broken. It's what I do best."

Mr. Spitzer, who has been attorney general for almost six years, said that as governor, he would try to overhaul the sluggish ways of Albany when it comes to budget and regulatory matters."

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/07/nyregion/07cnd-spitzer.html

Here's a tidbit from his site, http://www.spitzer2006.com :

The presidential election is over and "values" won. Political observers seem united on this essential point--the reelection of George W. Bush was an affirmation of Republicans and their values and a repudiation of Democrats, who apparently lack them. How could it come to this? Through the years, we have always prided ourselves on being champions of the values that working people and the electorate care about most: fairness, opportunity, inclusion, and responsibility. But, this time around, we didn't frame our message on these ideals persuasively enough. Instead, Bush's campaign captured and co-opted the value mantle and made it seem like he stood for everything that is good in the United States and that Democrats, in comparison, stood for nothing.

This never should have happened. And it would not have, had Democrats done a better job of challenging and unmasking Republican claims.

Sounds good to me.

3. I think this rules him out for 2008.
If he runs for Gov for 2006, he can't then turn around right after starting his term and start running for Pres.

Though, being AG and then Gov would REALLY set him up well for later (2012 or whatever).

4. I think he's a pretty young guy
There's time for him to serve a term or two in NY. As AG he had a wildly disproportionate effect on politics compared to the post itself -- I hope we'll see the same from him as governor.

It's good to have this kind of talent in the pipeline.

That's very exciting. We need more Democrats that will stand up to corporate special interests.

Is it just me or does his front page have a rather disgusting picture of a man's behind?!! If someone knows the webmaster they better fix it fast! Some hacker picked a good day to pull that prank.

11. It was in the "photo blog" section
a small version was on the main page. Someone must have thought it would be funny to load up a disgusting photo and it was automatically thumbnailed onto the front page. It's gone now.

10. Ok they removed the photo
They need to start approving what goes on the "My Photos" section before they allow people to post things. That was extremely obscene. I wonder how long it was there. Funny.

Was it the famed goatse.cx photo, with a bent-over guy you could fit a can of motor oil into?

Glad I missed that one. It's a favorite of trolls everywhere.

I don't see anything disturbing about the list, but I don't know much about New York politicians.

If he is going to parrot the W propaganda, I am out of that one. Count me out, Elliott! The "values" thigy came from an exit poll showing W lost, you idiot!

19. But he's calling BS on it
the same way Clark did, and the same way Kerry didn't.

At least read the whole article before you write him off.

26. I did. We have no "red states" in NY. It's all BS anyway - the imperial
new truth for us to study. We shouldn't even address it if reality means something to us. Anyone who studies their BS, loses my vote.

''We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And
while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll
act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and
that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you,
all of you, will be left to just study what we do.''

23. we need to talk about values
we need to talk about how increasing health care coverage is a good value, how taking care of the poor is a good value, how cracking down on unethical corporations is a good value, how making sure there is a liveabel wage is a good value.

24. If the Democrats in 2008,
once again, put forth a nominee that campaigns as if afraid to hurt his opponents feelings, I will write in Eliot Spitzer. He has shown he is a fighter now rather than in the distant past.
