Eliot Spitzer announces run for NY Governor

"Eliot Spitzer, the New York state attorney general who has built a nationwide reputation as an aggressive pursuer of white collar crime, said today he is running for governor.

Mr. Spitzer borrowed a page from another Democratic candidate, Howard Dean, who made an unsuccessful run for president, by announcing on his Website that he will be a gubernatorial candidate.

"I'm running for governor," Mr. Spitzer said on www.spitzer2006.com, in an entry he titled "Eliot's Blog." "I want to fix what's broken. It's what I do best."

Mr. Spitzer, who has been attorney general for almost six years, said that as governor, he would try to overhaul the sluggish ways of Albany when it comes to budget and regulatory matters."

The presidential election is over and "values" won. Political observers seem united on this essential point--the reelection of George W. Bush was an affirmation of Republicans and their values and a repudiation of Democrats, who apparently lack them. How could it come to this? If he runs for Gov for 2006, he can't then turn around right after starting his term and start running for Pres.

Though, being AG and then Gov would REALLY set him up well for later (2012 or whatever).

There's time for him to serve a term or two in NY. As AG he had a wildly disproportionate effect on politics compared to the post itself -- I hope we'll see the same from him as governor.

It's good to have this kind of talent in the pipeline.
