OMAHA — Rep. Tom Osborne will make an announcement early next month about his political future — including whether he will seek Sen. Ben Nelson's seat in 2006, the Republican congressman from Nebraska's rural 3rd District said Tuesday.
"In the next few weeks after having the opportunity to think thoroughly about my future, I will present a clearer picture about my plans," Osborne said. "I hope this will help to rule out some of the speculation that has been circulating over the past week."
Osborne was responding to speculation that he could be the Republican challenger to Nelson, a Democrat, in 2006. Political pundits also have said Osborne could run for governor in 2006.
Osborne's position has changed since last week, when Nebraska's political landscape was thrown into disarray after Gov. Mike Johanns announced he had accepted President Bush's nomination for U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
