Obversations from one caucus goer |
|
Please bear with me as I am not a professional writer. I just wanted to make a few observations about the caucus I attended. First of all, our precint was a bit disorganized at the start. They didn't have an accurate count of the people there. Why they didn't just count the sign in sheets was a big question. Anyway, five candidates were represented and four eventually gained viability. I aligned myself with Senator Edwards, as I gave this a lot of thought and felt like he was the best man for the job and still do. There were a couple of incidents with the Kerry backers being out of order(bigmouths). We eventually determined that there were 88 people at this particular precint. therefore, it took 14 people, or 15% to be viable. The first head count was Edwards 13, Gephardt, 13, Dean 29 or so, and Kerry had 25. the rest were undecided. Then we were told to fan out and work on people. I had an "interesting" discussion with a Gephardt backer about Union backing. He said that since my Union backed Gephardt, I should too. I said that I have a miond of my own, and besides that Edwards has an excellent record on Labor issues. We ended up getting all but one of the DK people, a Leiberman guy, and a Gephardt lady, not to mention some undecideds. All in all, it was an interesting experience and one which I think I'll repeat in 8 years, when we have to select a new Democrat nominee.

I am not sure I would put myself through that. I hate face to face confrontation, and I regard my vote as my personal business. I NEVER tell strangers how I am voting. (Well, except here, and I don't consider you all strangers ;))
I think it would be so intimidating and uncomfortable to caucus for a candidate who turns out to be non-viable in your precinct and have people trying to pull you over to theirs. I would hate that.
Edited 'cause I can't spell.

in the numbers sound awfully close to what we had in my Mason City precinct. Dean won our precint with 29 with Edwards close behind. Kerry had 14, and Gep had even less.
