Goodbye, Yucca; hello, Utah?
<WASHINGTON — Delays in opening a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain are forcing atomic energy producers to consider interim storage sites — like the one proposed on Goshute tribal lands in Utah's Skull Valley — for the spent fuel rods piling up around the country.

"I don't think we would take anything off the table," said John Kane, head of governmental affairs for the Nuclear Energy Institute, the powerful lobbying arm of the industry.

Officially, NEI does not support the Goshute interim storage plan, and officials insist the safest way to address the waste problem is to ship it once from the power plant to a permanent storage site and bury it far underground.

"We're focused on Yucca Mountain, not interim storage," Kane said.

That isn't likely. Sen. Harry Reid, the new Democratic leader of the Senate, is unequivocal in his opposition and has pledged to do everything he can to block it.And the more Reid and others can delay Yucca Mountain, the more attractive interim storage sites such as Tooele County will become.Still, "We're open to any solution," Kane said.>

1. Utah makes sense for Republicans
Utah will still vote for them no matter what they dump there. Half the people living there will probably just assume God will clean up the mess after Jesus comes back. Some of the elected officials in Southern Utah are so hostile to the environment that they would probably welcome nuclear waste.

2. Oh no, Nevada voted for him. They deserve the nuclear waste
I am now fully in favor of punishing Nevada for voting for Bush after knowing that he lied about nuclear waste.

4. I live in Vegas. I wish I could say that Yucca will be stopped, but
you know as well as I that big energy controls Repugs and many Dems. Vegas voted Kerry in the election and the city is growing extremely fast. Believe it or not, like most cities, progressive thinking is actually done here -- to some degree -- and I think progressive thought is actually growing here. I hope it's enough to stop Yucca, but I don't like the odds, yet.

8. but you also have Harry Reid who will do all he can to prevent it
can i ask you why the Yucca issue wasn't as big as it should have been in Nevada ?

i'm guessing people let their fears of terrorism come into their final decision to vote for Bush. when people vote on fear they ignore all the other issues they care about.

6. Utah can have it all. They should drop it on Orin Hatch's house.
