I think this is why people started to shy away. All of the screaming and yelling is a bit much.

That was the only part of his speech that I saw, but he was laughing and having a good time. I'd hardly characterize it as angry and crazy or whatever else people are saying. He was shouting, "we're going on to New Hampshire, and then this state and that state and that state and then washington, dc where we'll take our country back!" or something. It was fun and exciting for the crowd, and he was very clearly laughing and having a good time. His face did get red, but you can hardly blame the man for what his skin does when he gets excited.
I missed the rest of the speech and only turned back when the panel was saying how that was the worst speech and "did you see how crazy he looked?" and blah, blah, blah. Maybe I missed the important part, but the part you cited didn't strike me as freaky at all.
Edit because Dean's face was red, not read.

but that speech shows how tone deaf Dean is, IMHO. He needs someone to reign him in and to get him to have a more nuanced presentation.
Just heard someone (Scarborough?) on MSNBC say it was the worst speech since Quayle's VP acceptance speech in 1988. He might be right.

I must say that I agree with you. That was just plain awful. He sounded desperate and I honestly don't think he needs to be. A little humility would have gone a long way to reach people who just may have felt sorry for him-- the press has been beating him up a lot lately. Dean supporters would do well to acknowledge that fact and hope that Dean regains whatever he seems to have lost.

I think the audience ate it up--I'm sure it was exciting in person to see him pointing and growling the names of the states and then saying he'd win in all the home states of the other candidates and naming all the Februry 3rd states--but on TV it was awful. I thought maybe it was just me, and I had left DU for a while, but I came back to see if others thought it was as bad as I did...and it was bad.

AFTER that speech, they were stunned and all said he certainly didn't look presidental. they really did appear stunned. i was, as well. it really was as if he'd had more to drink than i have.

131. To be fair, look at the circumstances. |
|
He was the frontrunner.
He'd hit a groove, electrifying the party, and brining so many new people in the political process.
Everyone assumed he'd win in Iowa and that Iowa would be the stepping stone towards the national nomination.
Then some strange things start happening. Kennedy pushes Kerry HARD. Kerry gets his act together and starts being the candidate we all knew him to be.
Edwards experiences a surprising surge. He and Kucinich devise a plan to help each others' campaigns out.
Clark rises in NH and starts closing the gap between him and Dean nationally.
Then Dean gets hit with a wave of negative publicity.
I think he quite honestly was stunned and overwhelmed and just... lost it, there.
I feel kinda bad for him, actually.

but that speech was so far far beyond the pale it was almost frightening.
That was passion, if one defines passion in a holy-roller type sense. It was, to be kind, Dean being almost a caricature of Dean. With that speech, he has marginalized himself to such a degree that the only thing left for him now are the true believers.
I hope, for your sake, that few were watching, but I fear that that is headline material.
I truly am stunned.

a candidate for the most powerful job in the world needs to think before he speaks, and keep his emotions under control. There is nothing wrong with passion, but this sounded more like raving.
Hindsight is always 20/20, but he may have made a mistake in putting so much of his resources into winning Iowa. He could have still campaigned there without the "Perfect Storm" all-out effort: it put more at stake at a time when he didn't need to take high risks. In the meantime, Clark has steadily whittled down Dean's once-formidable lead in NH.
I'm trying to say he might be mad at himself for the strategic errors of the last few weeks. Still, he should get his emotions out privately, and have conceded with dignity. If displays of this nature are what Iowans have been seeing for the last few days, it goes a ways toward explaining the results.

And he WAS a madman in that speech. There's really no other way to say it. Yeehaw!

I'm still trying to let that speech sink in. (And for the record, I think I am out of the closet and fully on board with Edwards now).
This reminds me of Goldwater's nomination speech in '64. He dropped that extremism line on the delegates and then went euphoric. Meanwhile, 100 million people at home were scared shitless.
My biggest concern is that that speech is all that is going to be remembered about tonight. Forget Kerry's comeback or Edwards surge or even Gephardt's departure. It's going to be Dean's screaming.
