Let's try some re-framing |
|
There has some converstaion here recently about George Lakoff and his ideas for re-framing the political diaglog to favor progressive issues over conservative issues. I am interested in concept because I think the concept of re-framing the issues has some merit. Then I saw the MoveOn letter about the DNC Chair today.
From the MoveOn letter: "For years, the Party has been lead by elite Washington insiders who are closer to corporate lobbyists than they are to the Democratic base."
I have an idea. Let's start re-framing the words "corporate and corporation."
I believe, along with MoveOn, that the influence of corporations and corporate lobbiests in one of the most detrimental forces with our political system.
Any of you who are familiar with Thom Hartmann's material know that corporations were granted the legal rights of personhood by an aide's mistake transcribing a Supreme Court decision made back in the mid-1800's.
I suggest that in communications to the media, legislators and political people we start referring to corporations as "non-human entities" as a way to draw some attention to the idea that corporations are not, in fact, human beings and that they interests and priorities are not the same as those of people. Then we can start asking why our political leaders and legislators spend more time concerned with the interests of non-human entities than they do with human interests. Or why they spend more time soliciting funds from non-human entities. Or why they draft legislation that favors non-human entities. Or why non-human entities get tax breaks that people do not. And so on.
What do you think?

1. We need to take one more step back... |
|
I don't think most people even REALIZE that corporations are legally "people." We need to educate before we can reframe. In other words, we need to frame to begin with...

5. But wouldn't using a meme like "non-human entities" |
|
get attention and lead into educating people about how much corporations control our political system?

4. Reframe: Vote "Switches" not "Glitches" |
|
Glitches are random accidents. When computerized voting systems switch thousands, maybe millions, of votes all to the same candidate, that's no accident.
