LETTER: In the company of Republicans
KELLY ANSPAUGH, Ada
I’ve been intrigued by the response to my letter of Nov. 12, “Democrats need to woo new crowd.” I just want to clarify a few things.
I did not mean to say all those who voted for Bush are toothless, gun-toting gay-bashers. What I meant to say is the vast majority of toothless, gun-toting gay-bashers (those who voted, anyway) certainly voted for Bush, and everyone else who voted for Bush is therefore keeping company with toothless, gun-toting gay-bashers. The Republican Party tent is a big tent indeed, with lots of company to keep.
I was of course being facetious in suggesting Democrats should attempt to woo toothless, gun-toting gay-bashers. The reason the Republican Party won the election is it does not hesitate to appeal to and exploit the worst in people: fear (“Orange Alert! Run!”), hatred (“We want to make them die,” Ann Coulter on conservative Muslims), intolerance (“Queers back to the closet!”), greed (“Where’s my tax cut?”), ignorance (“Stem cells equal dead babies!”), etc. If stooping that low is what it takes to win, perhaps the Democratic Party is better off a loser.
That’s what I meant to say.
