Social Security ... farce?
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 12:35 PM by thecrow
I was checking around for old threads on social security and found this one where illegal immigrants are being charged for social security on their paychecks and it was determined that social security has collected about $376 billion from these immigrants and I assume this figure is rising as I type.
So how can they say social security is on the brink of bankruptcy??

MEXICO CITY - For the 14 years he worked as an undocumented migrant in the United States, Carmelo Rivera saw up to $30 deducted each week from the $300 to $500 he earned as a vineyard worker. The deductions were supposed to pay for his retirement.

But like millions of other Mexicans who worked under false Social Security numbers, he's unlikely ever to see a penny of it.

In fact, if a group of U.S. Congressmen has their way, undocumented migrants would be permanently barred from ever seeking to reclaim tens of billions they paid into Social Security. Instead, the money will go to fund American citizens' retirement.

Neither migrants nor their government appear to be fighting the issue, despite what's at stake: a little-known Social Security account called the "earnings suspense file," which grows at a rate of about $6 billion a year and now stands at about $376 billion.

1. I'm a farmer
and have hired tons of illegal immigrants though the years when legals weren't available, all of them have paid into SS, many with phony SS numbers. Never to be collected. Same goes for federal withholding taxes, even though they can get all of it back many never even file.

5. You're stereotyping
Farmers are divided much like the rest of the country, about 50/50

Here a link to the political section of a farmer's message board, sometimes you would swear you were at DU.

them would ever vote anything but straight ticket Republican.

Same deal when I lived in Indiana. I was in a frat house with a bunch of Ag majors, and they all loved Reagan and loathed Carter. I remember asking them why they didn't like Carter since he WAS a farmer, and they were like "yeah, a PEANUT farmer!" as if that summed it all up.

But I'm glad to hear there a folks in the farming community that are wising up to the Repubs. Bush Co. doesn't care any more about family farmers than they do about any other working men whether it's manufacturing or mining. Trying to turn independent farmers into peons for big corporations--it's killing the small towns out here.

2. Good point--SS is NOT on the brink of bankruptcy.
Just another Bush lie to push privatization.

Fully solvent through 2052 and funded to 80 percent after that according to Cong. Budget Office.
