Question with a disturbing answer
Over the past few weeks I've been writing letters and e-mails to elected officials and stated my opposition to social security reform. I'm sure that most of you have had at least some concern about the issue.

The question is this:

What communications have you received from Democratic leaders, that helps explain the issue, gives instructions for mobilizing a grass roots opposition response, and provide a focused response to what chimpy will be streamrolling over us?

The answer is a bit disturbing.

I write this as I delete another request for money from the DNC.

2. Just saw a poll that says 53% of Dems would like personal savings
accounts to invest part of their SS funds. This issue is going to be very popular with a lotta people.

4. I bet if they worded the question differently, it would yield a very
different result.

"Would you like the money that would otherwise go toward guaranteeing you an income during retirement to be used to enrich corporations via the volatile stock market?"

Huh.

3. Got an interesting letter from my Repuke Conman
about SS. Even though he is in a red district, he is being very careful on this issue. Boldface is mine-it shows where I think he has wiggle room to do the Shrub's bidding while pulling the wool over our eyes.

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts regarding SS personal savings accounts. It is always a pleasure to hear from you.

As you may know, this is a very important issue facing this Congress and this country. I cannot stress strongly enough that I will not support any legislation that proposes cutting benefits for current retirees, raising taxes, or raising the retirement age. The Americans who are receiving SS today were guaranteed those benefits by the government and I aim to make sure that promise is kept.

I read that he's ready to screw people not yet retired. But the tone of the letter makes it appear that he may be a bit worried about selling the Bush agenda on SS.

Receiving SS TODAY, tomorrow however, is another day.

8. What we must remember too...is that S.S. also include S.S.D.I...
for Disabled people...who in many cases will NOT be earning more money to put into a "private" account. Are we going to kick those people off the rolls...blaming them for their Disability? And for those currently applying to get on SSDI, are we going to deny them... because they won't be earning money to invest in their private acct. for an indefinite time. Currently the wait to get on S.S.D.I. is approximately 1-1/2 years or longer!! For someone truly Disabled, and without income...this is brutal! Last weekend for instance, I saw a Disabled person sleeping on the sidewalk during the day next to his wheelchair. He didn't look like a derelict, but merely Disabled ...and probably either waiting for his S.S.D.I....or already gave up on it, or was denied.
I really think that we need to go to the streets on this issue too. We can NOT let the Elderly and the Disabled be turned out into the street without benefits. And I simply do NOT believe that this Administration will stop short of cutting benefits to those not putting into a private account. I think they'll phase the whole thing out rather quickly...no matter what they say at first. Bush is famous for going back on promises. They'll simply start up the private accounts, and then suddenly say that the S.S. funds went belly-up much quicker than first thought.

10. I agree
they are already screwing the returning disabled Iraq War vets. Doing something about SSDI will be next. And don't forget these funds also are for survivor's benefits. My husband got SSDI after his father was killed in a plane crash.

My Conman's district includes a LOT of SS and SSDI people. I think they would get really riled if they lose any of their benefits. People are poor here, and their benefits are literally just enough to get by. Any cuts, and we have starving people.

7. of course. Its the crown jewel of effective govt policy
worked like a charm for decades. Needs a little tweaking. They want to send SSi into the same wildnerness that they sent healthcare to.

9. Yep, it's gonna go straight to those private Swiss bank accounts...
...where all the retirement savings of all those Savings & Loan retirees went (courtesy of Neil Bush) during the Silverado scandal.

F.D.R. must be turning over in his grave!

12. I got a similar letter from Duncan Hunter. His letter said...
that SS is in trouble, essentially, if we don't do something to fix it.

I called and said that the time has come to take away tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, if that's what it takes to properly fund Social Security and assure that benefits will be there for us when we retire.
