Social Security fix tough sell for Bush
http://www.detnews.com/2004/politics/0412/19/A01-36851.htm

WASHINGTON -- If President Bush wants to push his plan to overhaul Social Security through Congress during his second term, he will probably have to do something he rarely did during his first term: get his hands dirty.

To revamp the politically popular retirement program, many allies say, Bush will have to offer detailed proposals to Congress and engage in a broad public campaign to justify the change and its cost. And he will have to ride herd on legislators to ensure they do not veer from his central goal of shoring up Social Security by allowing younger workers to invest some of their payroll taxes in private accounts.

"It's going to take a lot of personal involvement and a lot of political capital," said Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., a leading proponent of private retirement accounts.

1. Even some who voted for Bush don't trust
Wall Street. And let's face it, a lot of folks don't really care that much about stuff unless it directly effects them or their families, and SS does.

3. That's true only... what about the environment??
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 05:25 PM by ailsagirl
The repugs don't seem to realize that the environment is NOT a partisan issue.

It wasn't always that way: the EPA was created during the Nixon administration-- it may have not been the consummate answer for all the environmental problems affecting this nation but it was a start.

Not it's been gutted, thanks to these absolute MORONS.

What about THEIR children and grandchildren... will they not need CLEAN AIR to breathe???

I've never seen such a transparent bunch of idiots in all my life. They're grasping at all the WRONG THINGS. All they care about is money and power. But money is meaningless if there's nothing left to buy and power is nothing without integrity and foresight.

5. As an environmentalist
who has gone through intimidation and threats with locals over this issue, I can tell you that they just don't get it. They have this quaint notion that the environment will always be there. Realize I live in a very rural area, and pollution is not so apparent--they literally don't think that illness and pollution are related.

2. Why doesn't Bush just declare War on SS
Seems America will fall in line if he says we are at war and you have to always in all ways support the The Connder and cheat.

8. Because it's not really broken
They only need to step in and try to stop the Bushies from stealing money from the working people.

9. A "hard sell" only until the Dems roll over...again.
They'll throw in a couple "compromises" for window dressing and brag about it.
