Will the press ever regain its credibility ?
As of right now, they have the spine of an earthworm. They have neglected to report anything that might be perceived as anti-Bush or this Administration. They act as if there is nothing to criticize. After all, the polls show something different. Why should they report anything contrary to the polls??

The illegal war, the continuing deaths from this war, the lies to get us into this war, the lies to continue this war, the pretending that the deficits are not important as our economy tanks, and the appointment of incompetent and immoral individuals to the highest appointed offices in this land, are all there to criticize. Yet, they slime along the in the muddy footprints of this White House and report nothing of substance to the American people. Do they think they have any credibility left? They should fold up their tent and get the hell out of Washington. They have forsaken their duty to keep their eyes on the powerful and the elected...

1. Yes
Credibility of the press comes in waves. It gets good...gets bad...then gets good again.

9. Not true
What's going on here in America runs deeper then that. We are in a time where this administration is developing policy to run in lock step with corporations ( can you say fascisms? ). Unless we have someone outspoken telling this to America we can expect much worse very soon. If it goes much further the only thing that will fix it is full blown revolution or collapse of our country itself.

2. The corporate owned media
will not ever recover. They are not a free press anymore. There are indeed fantastic free press journalist out here but they do not have the market base. I hope the internet changes that in our future.

4. I was thinking of that as I was posting.......
Amazing minds we have....

I tend to feel less optimistic now as there are multiple big power corporates in control.......But yes, we did recover then and I will use the Hurst example to hold out hope.

6. As long as they look on their jobs as depending on towing the line of
their corporate editorial boards and remain intimidated by the Shrubbites, I don't see a big change in MSM news. It will be more of the "soundbite mentality" which describes the majority of Americans. There are good independent media outlets out there in print and the internet, but it actually takes a little critical thinking for a media consumer to actually search them out. Unfortuanately, I don't see that happening.

7. Will they interfere with the Internet?
It seems the only "press" that is left is found on the Internet. My concern is that somehow they will control the Internet.
I flew back from Cols. Ohio in November, and was not allowed to use the sidewalk porter. They said I had to be searched. I told my son, "I guess they don't like the Internet sites I've been visiting." That was half-way joking and half-way serious. I asked why, and they said because I had a one-way ticket. Don't trust 'em.
How would everyone get together if that ever happened?

8. Depends. It will take a long time for me personally and I do know a
few other people who-once they find out all this- will never trust them again.

10. My first response was -- no -- but then I remembered Germany
and how the German media became a mouthpiece for the Nazi war machine. In the end -- one of the corporate media guys was hung for war crimes.

Today I have greater respect for the German media than the US corporate media -- the German media has reported US war crime stories that haven't been touched by the US corporate media.

It will take a major shock and major overhaul of the current media for it to become respectable.

We watched the corporate media trash Clinton (and he responded to this recently in a must hear interview with Peter Jennings) and then we watched the same media tell outright lies about Gore and then in this election cycle give the Swift Boat lying bastards a platform to spread their lies.

International war crimes trials and the public hanging of US corporate "journalists" who participated in the war crimes -- could be enough to shock the US citizens awake. But I am personally opposed to capital punishment.
