'Underdog' Dean Looks to New Hampshire to Recoup

Appearing a few hours later on CBS' "The Early Show," the former Vermont governor said he did not have to win the state to keep his campaign alive but wanted New Hampshire voters "to send a pretty strong message to Washington that enough is enough."

"I'm determined to fight back," Dean said. "... This is a real struggle. I got out in front. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at me .... And we're going to let New Hampshire-ites decide whether they want someone from inside Washington or want someone from outside Washington to be the nominee and to change the country."

Dean holds a slim lead over Kerry and retired Gen. Wesley Clark (news - web sites) in polls for the New Hampshire primary. Dean has led the field in national surveys of Democratic voters.

Offering one explanation, Trippi blamed Gephardt, saying the congressman had drawn Dean into a negative fight that "destroyed his campaign and nearly destroyed ours."
