10. Well, I'm not sure ... |

Based on some written responses, I believe I interpreted the questions somewhat differently than others. Rhite5's question is similat to the way I was going with this.
Everything is political, and I do view the consequences of my actions and the actions of the various government entities that speak in my name in as close to a global context as I can. But -- and this is the way I was thinking of the question originally -- my activism, in its various forms, is primarily local.
My initial comment was based on my opinion that efforts by the so-called rank and file are far more effective on a local level. We have leaders who act nationally, but they require cooperation from local organizations and individuals to achieve any tangible results.
Anyway, as I said, I think I was interpreting this question differently than most people.

6. Observer or effective activist? |
|
I have worked with all levels -- local, state, national -- both directly on campaigns and as an observer, testifier and letter-writer and more. As I get older, my interest has moved more and more to the national and international levels, but obviously only as an observer.
I am not sure that is a good response to the question though. We SHOULD focus our energies most at the local and state levels where the things we do can have a real impact. We really can't do anything about national and international politics.

I stay very closely tuned to NY (home state) and MD and VA (School in DC) politics. I am always watching national and international politics too.

I view politics on a symbolic level. Our vote is nothing but a valueless token regardless of what political scale we participate in. In local politics we have commissioners elected to vote for us. In state politics state Representatives, State Senators, and members of Congress are elected to decide which bills we like and which we hate. In national politics electors are appointed to pick a President for us, and two Senators are elected to represent each state in the union..regardless of whether it has five or sixty million people.
Every nation can send a voting appointed delegate to the U.N., regardless of changing population size or having the same five national titles of nobility dominate the UN security council.
