1. Thank you for posting this.
Apple is a GREAT company.

It understands the 'corporation as citizen' thing.

3. this is off mac rumours today....
Based on "highly reliable sources", Think Secret reports that Apple is expected to announce a $499 G4 iMac at Macworld Expo, probably 1.25GHz, with 256MB of RAM, a 40GB to 80GB hard drive, a Combo optical drive, USB 2.0, Firewire 400, 10/100Base-T Ethernet, a modem, and support for Airport Extreme, VGA, and DVI, packaged with Appleworks and a special version of iLife without iDVD.

The new Mac is said to be incredibly small and will be housed in a flat enclosure with a height similar to the 1.73 inches of Apple's Xserve. Its size benefits will include the ability to stand the Mac on its side or put it below a display or monitor.

Apple has been working on the low-end Mac for almost a year, sources report. Indications are Apple has been working mostly on finding the right mix of price, performance and features that would motivate Windows users to consider a Mac, and less on the actual engineering of the product. "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to design a bare-bones PC," said one source familiar with the project. "What it takes is a team of marketing and software experts to find the right mix to convince Windows users to buy a Mac at a price that is not much more than the cost of an iPod."

mainboard in apple land, can hold 1 gig ram, I think this is virtually the same setup. although 2 gig would be sweet.

6. We're buying Apple now for everything at work!
That makes me very happy. I just wish AppleCare was better. As my boss jokes, they should call it AppleDon'tCare. Jobs is now outsourcing that to a company in India that has no oversight or accountability. It's horrible now. I really like Jobs, but his outsourcing in this case was a very bad idea.

Example: just try to get a PowerBook keyboard out of them. They won't sale it as a part. You have to pay for the keyboard and three hours of labor to get them to fix it. Also, since they won't sale just the part, you have to ship them the computer back and wait 21 to 45 days to get it back.

9. Do you get them repaired locally?
Because 2 days is 10x as fast as the fastest I've seen from shipping hardware to Apple.

I just called (since I was thinking about it) to check on the repair of a couple of backlit PowerBook keyboards. Apple said they were out of the part, and it would take another 6 weeks. I'm in a lot of trouble, because I was the one that recommended getting those laptops. They were $3,300 with AppleCare and tax, so I'm in a lot of trouble.

14. .
Be very careful with your backlit keyboard. We've found them to be fragile, and they are hard to replace

> I use an external macally USB keyboard, would that float you for the interim?

We bought wireless BT keyboards for them. They work very well, but are awkward to use. It's comical to see someone with that huge laptop *and* an external keyboard on their lap.

> the have Westworld computers here

We have a CompUSA with one inexperienced Apple employee. He isn't comfortable opening-up the laptops, so we're stuck with shipping them off for repair.
