George W. Bush Is Most Admired Man in 2004
Please discuss amongst yourselves...I need another drink.

"Nearly one in four Americans name George W. Bush, without prompting, as the most admired man this year, according to the Dec. 17-19 CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll. Former President Bill Clinton, who recently underwent a quadruple bypass and opened his presidential library in Little Rock, Ark., comes in second place, with 6% of respondents mentioning him. Rounding out the top five most admired this year are Secretary of State Colin Powell, at 5%, former President Jimmy Carter, at 4%, and the Rev. Billy Graham, at 3%."

1. Bill Clinton won for all 8 years of his presidency...
this poll is basically a popularity contest, and since whoever the President is at the time is hammered into people's minds 24/7, well, there ya go...

More interesting, however, is that Hillary Clinton is the most admired woman. :)

But I come awfully close to it with George W. Bush. After all, if I were answering a poll, I'd say he's the man guilty of some of the worst evil in the world today.

68. I Must Say The Same
Through all my years of living I have veered away from using the word HATE for anyone or anything, but THIS IDIOT has sorely tried my Soul!

I remain absolutely AMAZED as to why others can even begin to think of him as a man (actually that's it) as a man! I personally feel he's such a FAKE and as close to EVIL as I've ever seen. This person has done more to RUIN America than anyone I've ever seen. He and his cohorts keep beating that STUPID drum of theirs and all I want to do is PUKE! I simply CANNOT STAND this IDIOT!
Think Left... Be Right!!!!

75. What's even worse
is that I am going to Brazil in a couple of days. And while I'm there, he will surely come into conversation--with people probably asking me some hard questions or taking me to task on some of the rotten policies he's put forth. It will be very difficult for me to be diplomatic on behalf of the organization I represent, and yet tell them the truth about how angry he makes me.

77. My Bleeding Heart Goes With You!
I don't think Brazil is all that crazy about America other than wanting to flee the plight of Brazil. I met a really Great guy from Brazil at a Kerry Rally the Sunday before the election. He was telling me that IF Bush won, that America would turn out JUST LIKE BRAZIL. Not knowing all that much about what he had gone through, I must say it did open my eyes a bit.

Having said that... I think Brazil is a beautiful country having gotten as close as Costa Rica once. Of course, I think there's a lot of difference between Costa Rica and Brazil too! Politically I mean. Costa Ricans were beautiful and wonderful people. As I'm sure many Brazilians are. Anyway, I live in Florida so you can tell them that there are millions of people who really CAN'T STAND THE IDIOT!! Unfortunately, in my opinion... the election was stolen once again. Living UNDER Jeb for the last 2 elections, and now having Katherine Harris re-elected as my Congressperson, my outlook on things has been down right PITHY!!!

Good Luck!

32. If you hate this site so much then why do you read and post here?
This site is not responsible for winning or losing votes for Kerry or any Democrat. It is simply a place for Democrats and progressives of various different stripes to discuss a variety of different things.

This is not Campaign Headquarters Central for the Democratic party. My guess is that people's Che avatars at this site had not the slightest effect whatsoever on the number of votes that Kerry got. Again, that is not the purpose of this site. I wonder if you might be more comfortable elsewhere?

58. Easing me out the door?
Who said I "hated" this site?

Sorry to offend, if I did, but I thought that this was a forum for Democrats, is anyone who agreed with Kerry on the issues too much of a "right winger" for ya? Don't question my credibilty as a Democrat, please. I may be in favor of the Democrats highlighting Democrat issues that will help win support from the middle, but that doesn't make me any less Democrat, OK?

All I meant, was that whether or not you think that the DU is a private club, messages posted here have been held up as examples of far left radicalism by the right, for the purpose of painting all Democrats as wackjobs. This is done for the purpose of hurting us with moderate voters. Lastly, if you think that posters with Che and Karl Marx avatars help us in any way...

I probably shouldn't have been rude though, and I apologize.

67. Maybe I misspoke.
The general flavor of your postings is one of disapproval towards other posters on this site. I makes it appear as if you're only here to bitch about how bad the rest of us are, and how we're somehow hurting the Democratic party by expressing opinions that you're not comfortable with.

This is a large and diverse group, and everyone who reads it is going to encounter views that they disagree with, or are made uncomfortable by. Most people find more effective ways of coping with the phenomenon then simply going around and insulting the board and blaming it for the misfortunes of the Democratic party.

As far as the Che and Marx avatars go, they are avatars that the site provides, so if you think that they are doing substantial harm to the Democratic cause, you might want to take up your concerns with the administrators.

I do think that it's a little interesting that the most extreme expressions of right wing radical extremism don't seem to harm the Republican party, while fairly mild expressions of leftist attitudes, such as those of Michael Moore are accused of doing irreparable harm to the Democrats. I'd be curious to know if you have any theories as to why that is.

No need to apologize to me. You might want to try apologizing to Union Thug.

The percentage of Americans mentioning George W. Bush as the most admired man is lower now than at any other point since he took office in 2001.

ROTFLMAO!!!

Also from Gallup:

The president is typically the most admired man each year. The last time a president did not top the list was 1980, when Pope John Paul II was the most admired man.

....so quickly. We LOVED Bill Clinton in the 90's, but now 51% of us feel that it's better to have an insane religious monster in office (sorry if I offend anyone of faith). But now, only 6% care to mention him as admirable? As far as I'm concerned, we are a very hypocrytical, naive people and we will believe all the bullcrap that's thrown our way. I blame, in part, the GOP owned media for this. In part, I blame the tame, submissive Democratic party. As for the remainder, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Now that he no longer has to play the moderate to appeal to the electorate, he and his administration are free to unleash their punitive agenda on the world, and we can't do a goddamn thing about it. The Congress is Republican and won't hold him in check, and he is no longer remotely accountable to the American people.

He is terrifyingly influential over the course of our lives and the future of our country, whether we like it or not.

It's stupid to pretend otherwise.

It's pretty amazing that Bush's job rating was below 50%, then above just before the election. Then not 3 weeks after, it's back down to 43%. Well, Americans may be naive, selfish and greedy, but I don't think they're total airheads. All those polls before the election were manufactured!

62. ewwww
As far as I'm concerned, he IS an ass, and he's not cute at ALL. Not even in the way other chimps are cute. Unless he's got a little donkey on his ranch, I gotta disagree with you on this one.

:puke:

Sometimes I say things just to make people puke. Really, my personality hasn't matured past that of a twelve year old.

69. REALLY?????
America has been 'effin FREEPED! But Why is the QUESTION???

A little good news for me today though. After coming out of a grocery store I saw a group of people at my car. My first thought was, Okay, get ready to rumble! I have bumper stickers all over my car DISSING The Idiot! As I approached with my head held higher than usual, looking down my nose for affect I was quite surprised to see the reaction. They were ADMIRING my car and the fact that I still cared enough to make a statement. I asked them if they like it and they ALL agreed and said thanks for hanging in there! I told them, they will stay on until the Florida Sun fades them enough to be restored by even more extras at home!

So while my IRE and ABSOLUTE wonderment about these Repukes down here in Sarasota County gives me plenty to "spit in their eye," I will keep up the battle. I plan to be so "in your fact" until this IDIOT is GONE! And then my car bumper will say Good Riddance! This Boy King makes my flesh crawl!!!

Isn't it a shame that a person has to think of the President of the United States in such a way??? The name GEORGE is not to be spoken in my home!
Think Left... Live Right!

72. Okay, I'll give up on the man. Who is the most admired woman?
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 06:22 PM by despairing optimist
Or don't the ladies count?

I have one: the mother of a fireman who died when one of the WTC towers collapsed as he was helping people escape. This lady is in Iraq now with Medea Benjamin helping out Fallujans because she said they're just as innocent as the people her son helped out. When I heard that story, I lost it.

There's a hero for you.

EDIT: Corrected Benjamin spelling.

are beyond help. I'd pick the moron in a minute for biggest asshole, most despicable excuse for a human being, biggest liar, most depraved mass murderer....There are many such "distinctions" chimp is worthy of. "Most admired" isn't one of them.
