Evangelical Leader threatens to 'target' Democrats
Evangelical Leader Threatens to Use His Political Muscle Against Some Democrats
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

Published: January 1, 2005

OLORADO SPRINGS - James C. Dobson, the nation's most influential evangelical leader, is threatening to put six potentially vulnerable Democratic senators "in the 'bull's-eye' " if they block conservative appointments to the Supreme Court.

In a letter his aides say is being sent to more than one million of his supporters, Dr. Dobson, the child psychologist and founder of the evangelical organization Focus on the Family, promises "a battle of enormous proportions from sea to shining sea" if President Bush fails to appoint "strict constructionist" jurists or if Democrats filibuster to block conservative nominees.

Dr. Dobson recalled the conservative efforts that helped in the November defeat of Senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota, the Senate minority leader who led Democrats in using the filibuster to block 10 of Mr. Bush's judicial nominees.

"Let his colleagues beware," Dr. Dobson warned, "especially those representing 'red' states. Many of them will be in the 'bull's-eye' the next time they seek re-election."

He singled out Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Mark Dayton of Minnesota, Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico and Bill Nelson of Florida. All six are up for re-election in 2006.

James Manley, a spokesman for Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the new Democratic leader, said Democrats had allowed 204 judicial appointments to move forward in Mr. Bush's first term.

"James Dobson needs to take a moment to focus on the facts," Mr. Manley said. He called Dr. Dobson a "front for the White House."

Is it time to tax the churches and 'religious leaders' who use religion to influence government policy and campaign for specific candidates?

2. Hey Jimmy
Focus on your own damn family.

It's time to tax all these motherfuckers. Every last one of them. Yes, even the liberal churches. The minute you start using your ostensibly religious organization to actively campaign for/against someone you need to start paying some goddamn taxes.

6. Amen Chovexani!
Dobson needs to give up that tax exempt status and hit the road. How on earth these guys think they stand for anything close to family values, religion or moral superiority is a constant puzzler. But in the mean time - Dobson, you agreed to certain constrictions when you accepted tax exemption for your nasty little organization so pay up or shut up.

3. It's time to do way more than that. Please see my rant in the Nebraska
forum. Ben Nelson and his pathetic whining has really set me off today. It's too early to be this angry about politics and cowards in the democratic party, but when I read that story early this morning, and saw what that weasel Nelson's spokesperson had to say, that just frigging sent me into a blood pressure raising tizzy.

Please notice that Nelson's spokesperson even admits to him having met with Dobson to discuss issues. What the hell does that mean? And all they guy did was whine about the effect his statement would have on the MEDIA. That's Nelson's first concern, how it would effect him personally. Not that this guy has openly declared war on our political system, not that he's really overstepped the boundaries of church and state, hell no. Just how it would play in the media.

These dems are going to cave because they're such a bunch of whiny whimpy cowardly sellouts. You watch.

5. It is time the Democrats started targeting James Dobson
This fascist and others like him should be called out and exposed for what they are and the Democrats should start targeting these people and their organizations that support them.
I know that at first it will be seen as an anti Christian movement but if they only expose those leaders and organizations that are using the pulpit for political reasons and really investigate this movement, then it will be seen as a patriotic duty to protect the Constitution as the founding fathers intended.
Everyone should move on this and contact your Congressmen and Senators, Not that the republican ones will listen but it will put them on notice.
We can not allow this sort of Nazi tactics to take place in this great land.
Take back America!

I think his comment should be investigated by the FBI, SS, NSC, the Capital Hill Police, and the AG of the State these men are from.

Dobson appears to be wildly insane and we don't have to take this from the head of a church. This is more than rhetoric.

These people have far more in common with the Taliban than with us. When unelected self-appointed religious "leaders" (such as Osama Bin Laden, James Dobson, et al.) try to exercise some non-existent right to control the lives of others, then it's time to get serious in defense.

15. The good news is...
that there's a link to a recipe for some neat no-bake peanut butter cups on Dobson's website.

However, all this talk about standing up to Dobson is just talk unless there is another private organization to do it. No politician is going to trash the guy who controls thousands of votes and a huge money and propaganda machine. It just doesn't work that way.

Pro-choice, gay, and other organizations have to get their own credibility with the minions of the right in order to have a proper slugfest. As of now, only one voice is being heard in too many areas.

So, how does, say, a gay organization get a voice in a place like Nebraska? I have no idea, but somebody better figure it out fast.

Living in NY and NJ for most of my life, I'm used to a monstrously wide spectrum of views, but vast amounts of the country doesn't have that luxury. The real problem is that there are far too many insular areas where dissent is not tolerated. It's not even political, but a social thing, where everyone is supposed to be "nice" to each other.

We would WIN votes if just one of those Senators stands up and tells Dobson to eff off.

I have many Libertarian friends and a few mod Repub friends who would vote for any Dem who would stand up to the religious wackos who've hijacked the Republicans.

THEY feel as threatened by this admin and the wingnut religious wackos as I do.

17. This is good news for those targeted Democrats...
He came to PA and campaigned against Arlen Specter in the Repuke primary to try to get Toomey the nomination. It backfired BIG! So let him take on those Democrats. It can only help them. He is popular with a tiny segment as far as his politics are concerned and he pisses off more people to act (Democrats who registered Republican to vote against Toomey in the primary) than he generates support for his candidate.

I think Manley is wrong that he is a "front for the White House." * campaigned hard for Specter in both the primary and the general election and it drove the religious right bonkers. Pissed them off at * and maybe cost him the PA vote, plus they are all bent out of shape at Santorum who toed the WH line on Specter and that may cost him with his base in '06.

He is a decent man who isn't going to sit idly by and let evil succeed.

Reply 12 - Posted by: Native Texan, 12/31/2004 11:23:51 PM

If a person is a Christian evangelical leader then he is trying to run the government. Someone like George Soros or the ACLU is just exercising their right as a citizen. Sounds like a double standard here.
I admired him , more power to him for informing the people as to which Senators are going to try and block President Bush's appointments. We the people will help Dr. Dobson in this effort.

Reply 13 - Posted by: berserker, 12/31/2004 11:38:00 PM

Dobson or Soros, both have views and both put people in their bullseye. One whats to uphold the constitution, the other wants to destroy it along with this country. Which one will command your ear as a constituent?

Unlike such renowned men of the cloth as Rev Jesse Jackson and Rev Al Sharpton, Dr. Dobson is not a liar, not a criminal and not an immoral hypocrite. Go ahead and say your piece Jim, I'm listening.

By the way. Why are conservatives labeled red when that color has always been used to denote communists. Shouldn't we be blue and the slcilaist left be red?

Reply 64 - Posted by: remington, 1/1/2005 10:22:56 AM

Perhaps Dr. Dobson could do just about as well by going after some of the RINOs in the Senate. That would make his entire crusade more "non-partisan".

Or at least smoke out the fifth columnists in the Republican party.

Reply 66 - Posted by: ivehadit, 1/1/2005 10:33:39 AM

Let us not forget that we have only won round ONE and that is because George W. Bush is an exceptional leader who stands behind his beliefs regardless of what liberals and/or CONSERVATIVES support.

Many times, many on these threads have queastined his judgement and strategery. But George prevailed.
Becuase he is politically smart as well.

Hillary is next and this is the big kahuna. SHE MUST NOT SUCCEED in her bid for the most powerful position in the world. Or any other global socialist/dem for that matter.

We must continue to be smart and not POWER HUNGRY.
The democrats are POWER HUNGRY, especially the hard left. And look what that's gotten them.

Reply 68 - Posted by: Delilah, 1/1/2005 10:36:59 AM

Religion scares the Slimes senseless, but that doesn't take much as they are a bunch of sissies. Anyone who helps us get more conservative judges is OK with me.

It's time that born-again Christians everywhere stand up and take this country back. The U.S. was founded on Christianity. The prayers of Christians all over this country keep the U.S. afloat. It's time we stop treating other religions as equal. They're not.

Reply 75 - Posted by: Sunflower, 1/1/2005 11:51:22 AM

Wow, the dems are running scared, like holding a cross up in front of a vampire. Does Dr. Dobson have the FBI files on these Senators, as hillary does on Republicans, hopefully so!!! Why do the dems support the communist founded AClU, to take away Prayer in School, the Ten Commandments, etc., any religious support, which is what our Nation was founded on? Down with ACLU, and GO, Dr. Dobson. We're behind you as we were behind John O'Neill.

Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 06:35 PM by Q
...need to get their head out of the bible for one minute (if they've ever read it) and read the Constitution. The president nominates and our representatives 'advise and consent'. No president has the right to expect that every nomination be accepted by the people's representatives. He is not a King..where his word is the law. We have a representative government...separate but equal..and they have a duty to the people to keep partisan ideologues off the bench.

These hypocrites cheered when Republicans blocked Clinton nominees...saying their side had every right to block them if they didn't approve. Now they claim Democrats don't have the right and responsibility to do the same thing.

And now we know why the founders created a wall of separation between the church and state in the first place.
