Social Security is our first big chance to bog down/neutralize Bush 2 term
The battle to privatize social security is our first big chance to oppose Bush.

Since this is a major priority for Bush, it's defeat would be a major symbolic victory and and could be the symbolic victory that will destroy the illusion of Bush's mandate and of his political efficacy.

It would be much easier to defeat subsequent Bush policy proposals if his biggest, most important one has already been crushed by popular resistance.

The Social Security issue seems to me to be the thing all the various anti-Bush activists should focus on for a massive concerted effort to produce a symbolic victory.

I hope we can see the unity we had before the election once again. It would be very self-reinforcing if the measure was soundly defeated and could produce a progressive momentum that would carry us to victory in 2006 and 2008, and give us the belief that we CAN limit the damage of Bush's second term.

1. And besides, his idea is a terrible one
That's the main reason. So, the Dems better stick to their guns. Giving in to bad ideas has contributed to the mess we're in.

5. We should fight for that reason alone, but nailing the coffin lid on
Count Bush's domestic agenda is a nice plus.

2. Focus on the Younger Generation
I have two 20 something daughters. Both they and their friends are absolutely against this. How many of the younger generation are aware that if they DONT invest in these private accounts, they will get LESS MONEY? My younger daughter said, "That's GAMBLING. How the hell am I supposed to know what the stock market will do in 45 YEARS?" My older daughter, who makes only $12/hour, said, "I CANNOT AFFORD to pay a BROKER. Why make THEM RICH? I certainly don't have the time to do this MYSELF. I am too busy WORKING."

3. Not just symbolic
It is an absolute necessity that we defeat his attack on Social Security.
