Democrats to show torture vid at Gonzales hearing. But who is against it?
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 09:57 PM by wyldwolf
"Normally, I side with disclosure and openness, but in this case, the material is evidence," Sen. Schumer (D-NY) said last year.

Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the videos should be made public and that they proved to him that there was an organized policy of abusing prisoners to get information -- approved by the White House.

Top Hill insiders explain Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) has not ruled out exploring the abuse at Abu Ghraib with Gonzales in open session. But a well-placed Kennedy source said the Attorney General's confirmation hearings will not be turned into a showdown with the military.

From Drudge so take it for what it is worth.

1. If they really do it, it will be a step in the right direction, and,
I hope, the first of many.

2. Hell yea
This is promising. And I agree with the Kennedy source saying it shouldn't be turned into a showdown with the military. It should be all about Gonzales, Rumsfeld, etc.

3. I find it ironic, if true, that Kennedy would be hesitant to show it...
..while Levin and Schumer appear to be gung-ho for it.

6. I agree
I would think it would be the other way around. Remember, this isn't Kennedy speaking, it's an aide. And it's Matt Drudge, who hasn't always been correct.

4. it's a great idea
make it part of the public record.

maybe the Gonzales nomination (and the arrogance behind it) will blow up in BushCo's face.

maybe the media will ignore it completely.

can't hurt, IMO.

5. Show it in all it's gory (pun intended)
These people have to understand that this is what Gonzales approved. The reward for his approval (in case no one had yet gotten it) is US Attorney General position.

8. Ah yes, let us see these quaint violations of the Geneva Convention
Just a few merry pranksters, what could be so bad.

The most offensive thing to me is how they've tried to make the whole thing sound like a few bad apple privates with no guidance from anyone above. Horsehockey.

Way to sell the troops down the river, Rummy. Way to support the troops there, by cutting them loose in space to save your pruney hide.

How can anyone have a Bush sticker and a support the troops ribbon on their car at the same time. I want a sticker to put between "Pick one"

9. It should be done in a way that protects our troops
What I mean is, these civilian bulldogs should be shown up for what they are doing, and that is endangering our own soldiers/marines if they become prisoners of war at some time.

The military should not be the ones taking the heat for this. It all comes out of the civilian Bush administration wackos, including the Pentagon, the Justice Dept and the White House. I don't know about CIA or state when it comes to this. Point being, it's all Bushista terrorism, and they are trying to pass the buck off on the military.

Not that there aren't some military who shouldn't be held accountable.

Point being: let the public see this stuff; let the chips fall where they may. My guess is it won't be at the feet of some private reservist at Abu Ghraib.

The Dems in the Senate have to get creative now, and I think it might be easier w/o Daschle in there, sad to say.
