Pigboy Says Democratic Opposition to Gonzales is "racist"
and says that some senators, and mentioning Tom Daschle, issued a memo saying that they were opposed to nominating Gonzales to the US
District Court because he is "Hispanic".

He says it is pure and simple racism by the Democratic Party and nothing else - nothing to do with torture, etc.

How does he get away with this crap? Is there any such memo in existence or did he just pick this fact "out of his butt"?

2. That is the game Bush is playing
Acuse the democrats of racism. He will follow it up by electing a radically conservatice minority supreme court judge and play the card again. Repeat a lie enough times and eventually it is perceived as truth.

4. of course there's no such memo
IIRC, there was some right wing radio flap about a memo when bush nominated Carlos Estrada to the bench last year. Some Dem strategist had written a memo saying that it would be risky to oppose him because he is Hispanic.

Wanna bet that that's the only semi kernal of truth in rush's rant -- and that he got it backwards and about the wrong guy?

5. The White House has refused to release the memoranda --
-- so presumably they do exist.

The GOP has no leave calling anybody else "racist."

13. the White House is refusing to release memos GONZALES wrote
not a memo that Democrats allegedly wrote about him, which is what the OP says rush is claiming exists. If they had such a memo, no doubt they'd release it!

14. My recent letters to various U.S. Senators, including --
-- Patrick Leahy, referenced memoranda Gonzales had authored which allegedly condoned/advocated the use of "extreme interrogation techniques," i.e., torture, in the conduct of U.S. foreign occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places.

I urged the Senators to 1) please confirm that these passages existed in those memoranda and if so, 2) please consider opposing his nomination, as such a point of view should not be the position of the nation's chief justice official.

9. Dittoheads are too dumb to notice
he likely spent the hour before spewing his usual about Democrats being the party of racial quotas, welfare queens, and special interests. Cut to commercial, three minutes being long enough for his listeners to lose track without fresh hectoring, and come back with the Democrats as racist tack. Who's gonna notice? He's got the easiest job in the world.

These babies could grow up to be terrorists and fall under the torture memo.

16. I don't know Gonzales' background, but his name is Portuguese,
not Spanish. I don't know if he's European Portuguese or Brazilian, but the names that end in "-ez" in Spanish end in "-es" in Portuguese.

20. Mexican American heritage
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 07:42 PM by orangepeel68
Gonzales, 49, was reared in a Roman Catholic Mexican American family in Texas by parents who had been migrant farmworkers.

19. Look o him as the front man who will initiate the meme
(given his orders from the WH, of course) and you can count on it--it will be repeated over and over until it is believed to be truth. Gonzales is not a torture man at all. Democrats are opposing him because they are racist. Uh huh.

Watch for it.

21. Of course he's going to say that!
That's what they ALWAYS say when we object to something. They ALWAYS play the race card! They have nothing else to use. They can't debate our points of objection on the merits so they have to low-ball us and attack us with a character-assassination like "racist". I've been expecting this for weeks and waiting for it.

It shows a lack of imagination on their part as well as a lack of any valid arguments.

There was never any memo such as he states. What he says is a distortion.

This is what we have to expect from them. It's low, it's dirty, and it's not true. But they do it over and over and over again, so we need to figure out ways to pre-empt this kind of attack.
