Shirley Chisholm is Progressive-of-the-Week

Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm is the first woman to be named MoveLeft Media's Progressive Person-of-the-Week.

More significantly, she is the first black woman elected to the US Congress.

She was first elected to Congress in 1968, as a Democrat who represented part of New York City's borough of Brooklyn.

She died Saturday at age 80.

Her career included running for president in 1972 under the slogan, "Unbought and Unbossed."

As a Congresswoman, she was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and the draft and sought to reduce military spending.

She supported spending increases for education and healthcare.

2. Thank you for posting these wonderful photos
Shirley Chisholm was as much a part of my growing up as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Muhummad Ali.

What a beautiful, gutsy woman who paved the way for us all.

4. Shirley Chisholm Is One of the Greatest Politicians
in the history of these United States of America. I wish she
could've become president. Ms. Chisholm, you are immortal.
Ms. Chisholm, you are one of the reasons why I'll always be a
democrat. The democratic party should adopt your slogan,
"unbossed, unbought" and live it out.

(back then), than she received by being black, not to diminish either oppression...my fellow brothers.

A truly wonderful, lovely, insightful, tough, caring woman.

I will truly miss her!
