Gonzalez hearings wrapping up, anti-torture activists speaking up.
Harold Koh, dean of Yale Law School testifying now, and ripping Gonzalez.

I know he will get confirmed, but after hearing this stuff, he should be pulled from consideration.

2. Koh is EXCELLENT isn't he? Very precise with a strong argument.
Concise, clear and terribly damning.
Good stuff.

5. Because he values the Constitution and the Geneva Convention.
Therefore he must be a godless terrorist. :eyes:

Just a slight rant that I thought I would pull. Suffice to say, if Gonzales is affirmed, this is yet another shameful day for this country.

9. Read the original, no problem, my friend. It's been a LONG day.
And we're all kind of wondering how to react to it!

I posted a thread I lived to deeply regret. This is a strange, but to me, somehow fulfilling, day.

7. Specter has been downright hostile to Koh. He can't handle the truth.
Specter still believes there are times (necessitated by Nat'l Security, naturally) when torture is legitimate.

Repubs should be tortured first. Assholes.

10. Remember, their kids are never deployed,
because they don't enlist.

It's those kids who want to go to college and can't otherwise afford it that are threatened by our flaunting of the GC and constitution.

12. Cornyn trying to make argument Al Queda exempt from Geneva Conventions
and a good point made by Retired Admiral now Dean
of Franklin Pierce Law Center said if that logic
was followed, then any troops fighting them are
exempt also from Geneva Conventions.

Cornyn said lawyers can disagree about these matters...
but Koh said the Supreme Court is the ultimate arbitrator
for disagreeing lawyers and matters and the Supreme
Court had so far agreed that this administration
could not hold prisoners without legal representation.

I think it's like fighting the mob or a crime syndicate...
they are criminals and you try 'em in court. They don't
wear uniforms but do carry weapons.

I don't know why sane voices can't be heard on this
point in this country...Koh was a great panelist
as were the other two. Too bad they spoke so late
in the day (I wouldn't have accepted Cornyn either
to Yale Law School, but he sure is a good political shill for
the Bushies)

14. The Really Bad Thing
The really bad thing is that he is a real estate lawyer. Therefore, he probably has little experience in dealing with the law that is dealt with by the Attorney General. It seems to me that and Attorney General needs to have a rather large knowledge of criminal and international law. I do not think he has that knowledge. In addition, it may not have been Gonzalez that wrote those memos. It may have been Cheney's lawyers who actually wrote those memos. That is bad in that Gonzalez is willing to be a shill for Bush. He is willing to have someone else write memos and then use his name. Then things get worse when you think he is a real estate lawyer and may not have wrote those memos. That means that he may not have even read the Geneva Convention. This guy does not deserve to be the Attorney General.

15. Gonzalez would have trouble getting to be dean of Yale....
I believe John Yoo is culpable also in these
torture(d) memos.

16. Just the fact that we have a 'pro-torture' nominee is incredible.
I never thought I'd see the day where political power in the US is held by a group that essentially advocates torturing people in concentration camps. I'm surprised Gonzales tried to play relatively nice today. At least he didn't come right out and say, "Yeah, we tortured 'em, and we're proud of it!! Wanna make something of it?"

Are you anti-torture or pro-choice regarding torture?
