1. Depends what the party line is |

If we're split as we are now between a moderate / corporate side in a leadership role and a progressive side in an expanding role, then I would rather see a split than see a party line I disagree with rubber stamped.
edit: But on things to do with the flippin' heritage and lasting achievement of the party like Social Security I would expect a straight party line defense against these privatization feelers.

But what I guess I should have asked is, would you like to see votes down straight party lines with us opposing the fascists?

3. The lack of discipline is good |
|
The U.S. Congress has far less party discipline than Parliament here in the U.K. This allows your congressmen to be more responsive to their constituents.
There will always be some conservative Dems who vote with the Pubbies a lot, and then there will be some liberal Dems who disagree with the party from the left; but overall I think that a freer party structure is better.
Put another way, if the British Labour Party had the lack of discipline that the Democrats have most of Blair's 'modernising' agenda would have been dumped, and British troops might not be in Iraq.

4. A few years back I would have said 'sometimes'. |
|
Now that they have been marginalized by a non-thinking majority of automatons on the other side of the aisle, I say 'always'.
