Can you give me some input on selling election reform??
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 04:54 PM by moggie12
In terms of grabbing public attention on electoral reform (now that Sen. Boxer went to the trouble of standing up on principle), what do you think of:

1) Democrats going on TV and talking incessantly about "people having to stand on line for three hours to vote". I know this is chickenfeed to many DUer's in terms of the outright fraud issues, but I think it's a good way to get public attention and support. Americans HATE standing on lines. If the Republicans engage in their usual obstructionism, I think we should go on the attack, talking about how "the Republican Party doesn't care that Americans have to wait three hours on line to vote." This kind of sound-bite stuff is easily understood by Americans as they're flipping through the channels on their Barcaloungers. Also, I was watching Fox last night and the 3 smarmy doofs who usually rip the Dems were amazingly subdued (Fred Barnes is one, can't remember the names of the others): The squinty-eyed guy admitted he agreed something needed to be done about long lines. I'm telling ya, they're vulnerable on this issue -- if the Dems would pounce fast, the legislation might get somewhere. "Long lines" is a great wedge to open up the whole election reform can of worms that the Republicans want so desperately to keep sealed.

2) What if, when Boxer introduces her legislation, all the Democratic Senators and Reps take turns standing on a "symbolic" line in the Capitol Rotunda (rotating coverage for three hours). This would get press attention and show the American people that the Democrats care about average Americans and what they go through. Stupid publicity trick?? Maybe. Effective? I don't know, what do you think?

Too hokey?? Got any other ideas??

(Edited to remove stupid stuff I oringinally had at the beginning)

I'm tired of Dems always being out-PR'd by the Republicans!! Whatever it takes, I want to get this damn election legislation passed!
