I was not raised with these handy "Internets". It took a long time for me to use a computer at all...2 years ago, and just recently I joined this discussion forum. These DUers are great, and do so much hard work. I am truly amazed that I get so much information of such variety in one place. I was a Young Democrat for John F. Kennedy, and will always remember the day that I shook his hand when he came to Maine. I said I'd never wash my hand again, but I kinda' had to. Needless to say I was thrilled. I'd really like to feel so enthusiastic about a candidate again. I really think Kerry would have made a good president. I feel that he is a decent man that I could respect. Sigh!! I voted for Kucinich in the primaries. He better represents my views. Anyone who comes here and reads will be better informed, so I hope lots of people read the variety of discussions which take place on DU. Sorry, I blathered.

In fact, what has happened is that a minority of extremists hijacked the Party, and they are repulsed by them. Sane Republicans feel as disoriented by Bush's victory as Democrats do....

Even a few "prominent" Duer's with 1000 + posts. If you read DU regularly you will notice it is not hard to constantly bash Kerry, or the Dem party or any Dem in office as long as you are supposedly on the ultra-left, like fed up with all Dems and want to go third party.

One thing to look for is constant Dem bashing, but then they are absent from any threads that bash Bush or the republicans. It really isn't difficult to spot them, at least for me, that is why the ignore function is a great feature on Du. Even if they are "clever" enough not to get caught, you can still put them on ignore and wallah, it is just like they are banned.

12. I'm a RINO. Gonna change parties now.

I've been lurking and posting and totally addicted to this board since Nov 3rd. To the point of reading then hitting "reload" when I was at work. I'm conveniently a web developer. Work was/is SOOOO depressing because I am in a cubby of wacko repubs - 4 of them! The closer it got to election, the more afraid I became that * would actually win again, that I joined the Repubs for Kerry to find/show support. On Nov. 3rd, I *KNEW* something was wrong because my 11yo daughter and I followed the exit polls SO closely on election night. I cried when I woke up and saw that the news networks were calling it for *. I truthfully never thought anyone in their right minds would ever vote for *

I didn't even know DU existed until Nov 3rd when I started searching for some answers. I am (was) also a member of the Repubs for Kerry. Hubby and I made up our minds yesterday that we're switching parties: 1) because of the dems taking up for the people of the US the way they did; 2) because we want nothing to do with the party of *, and 3) because we want to help change the balance of Congress which means working with/for Dem campaigns in 2006 and 2008.

We may be registered Repubs right now, but our kids are born Dems! Even my 4yo was saying yesterday, "I'm gonna vote for Kerry when I grow up". Until yesterday, this household didn't acknowledge a presidential win and hadn't removed our yard sign.

19. When hubby's foreign student workers

were talking about the * win, he outright told them that it wasn't over yet. They were really shocked and surprised. He explained the process to them, filled them in on Conyer's and the investigation, and told them to watch CSPAN yesterday. He works one cubby away from me, so we drove home at lunch, then listed to the rest via the web when we got back. Those foreign students got a good look at democracy in action yesterday, and a HORRIBLE (but true) picture of what the Repubs stand for -- Themselves!

I taught Carper's kids in Sunday school and just *love* Biden (watched him with Gonzales yesterday), Gov. Minner and Lieut. Gov. Carney. Heck, most of the people in politics that I really know and respect ARE Dems. Yup! We're serious. We were just talking today about how we switch exactly. I figure just contact the board of elections - am I right? Minner can't run again next term and I certainly can't stand the repub that's been trying to get in there (Lee). I'm going to try to get Carney in if he's willing. He's my friend's son-in-law.

And yes, we're Christian. We go to church every Sunday and are majorly involved in extra activities there - BUT - we are the kind of Christians that Jesus wanted his people to strive to be, not those wackos that are in our faces all the time and trying to run (ruin) the country and get rid of everyone who doesn't have their opinion.

Delaware is supposed to be a bellweather state. There was ALOT of talk about it not being reliable since last election. I told Hubby that Delaware's status didn't change - it's still as reliable as ever, it went Gore last time and this time went with Kerry. I take some consolation in that. (Is that wierd or what?). But thank God I'm in a Blue state! HOWEVER, I *will* travel to a red state for vacations :) Hatteras!

I will butcher their screen names, but two I can think of are

ModRepubinPA and Dr_Eldritch (I think I got that one wrong). Both are REALLY nice people with very level heads who are NOT happy with bush and didn't vote for him.

I've had great conversations with both of them. They are pretty hardcore DUers.

Also there are plenty of posters here who are registered republicans so they can vote in the primary for the repub they think has the worst chance of winning.

23. i'm a registered republican, but more like a RINO.

i've said so several times on this board that i'm a registered republican and why i am (it has nothing to do with this modern republican party and it's false 'values'). i'm easily more on the liberal (or as i prefer to say, libertine :+ ) spectrum, far more left than the democratic party and probably more liberal than a slim majority of posters here.

but being a republican hasn't been productive in terms of primaries -- republicans just have a mock primary, there's no real weight to it. so most of my selections (to throw *anyone* more liberal than the 'accepted' candidate) is just overwhelmed by the mindless voting of other party members. so that hasn't turned out to do much. but the consumption of gop fliers (free paper mache! ahhnold pinatas for everyone :evilgrin:) and crib sheets on how to spite their votes along with wonderful pre-paid envelopes is a plus. that and saying you are a republican is a great way to find out someone's face behind the mask. hooboy, don't that inner bigot come out faster than lightning once you tell someone that you are a republican... it's adorable that they think their secrets are safe with me. :evilgrin:

33. Republican dissent within the party is very important now.

Republican politicians won't listen to Democrats in general, but may listen when enough of their own supporters (or party members, at least) speak out to tell them their policies are wrong.

I urge you to use your Party affiliation to attract attention from other moderate Republicans, or even conservatives on issues like fiscal policy, and encourage them to join you in protesting actions of those in power.

Why not get a group of Republican voters in your district together and ask for a meeting with your Congressman? Bring a list of the worst outrages and an action plan you want him to follow--ie, getting real about electoral reform to stop the cheating by rigging elections, protecting NOT privatizing Social Security, preserving the environment instead of trashing it, opposing torture, the nomination of torture-master Gonzalez, and the building of gulags to hold people for life without charges, for starters.

The actions of today's Republican party do not represent American values. They are not Republican values, or family values. They are the values of corporate greed and fascism, and they are destroying our country. This is the consistent message that good Republicans need to deliver, loudly and repeatedly, to their leaders.

I have been looking for some guidance and good suggestions. I've thought about ways to start a suburban mom group with other moderate Republicans locally. I can't tolerate the right-wing zealots so I will withhold sending them an invitation. I just wish I had some more experience political contacts locally on the Dem side to help me with ideas/talking points/quickfacts/etc. I tried contacting my county Dems but they are only focused on city council races.

Thanks to W&Co and some of the most repulsive in Congress, it would appear that every person who registered Republican in this country drank the Kool Aid. I have always detested Kool Aid myself and believe that questioning authority, in all its forms, shows intelligence. I appreciate the information and discussion on DU and have always tried to post respectfully. I have many common goals with Dems in this fight against a neocon theocracy.
