Man, this guy... up is down, left is right, the Democrats are all about champagne and caviar while the rich suffer... and the Republicans are the true caretakers of the poor. :puke:


People often ask me what was the single most defining moment in my conversion from card-carrying Democrat to right-wing conservative. Notice I did not use the word Republican after conservative, since many Republicans are not conservatives. "The Terminator" and John McCain are just two I would never cast my ballot for.

I would have to say the metamorphosis started in 1982. I was a lowly cub reporter for WKHM News. My boss sent me down to the old Sheraton Inn to attend a media gathering for NAACP Executive Chairman Julian Bond.

I was always taught that the Republicans were for the rich, and the Dems for the poor. Well, that old stereotype sure didn't wash at the Sheraton that day. I witnessed the caviar, champagne, cheeses and fine wines flowing in the most expensive suite of the hotel!

The first thought that came to mind: "How dare they! ... How dare these so-called champions of the poor!" Here we were in the middle of a Carter-induced recession, with horrible poverty just three blocks south of the Sheraton, and Julian Bond and his Democratic politician friends are in the middle of a lavish spread Julius Caesar would be jealous of!

Mr. Bond was a very cordial host. I had a wonderful one-on-one interview. I still have the original tape. No, I didn't ask the hardball questions I should have asked. At that moment, I was one young, dazed and confused liberal media player. But that Sheraton scene is forever etched in my mind as my single most political turning point in my life.

Democrats the party of the poor? Sorry, folks. The event made me so sick to my stomach, I wouldn't even partake of any of the delicacies. My thoughts were with those living three blocks south of the Sheraton.

6. He made an unfair comparison

What I believe he saw was the upper class. That is made up of all the political parties. There are rich Democrats, Republicans, and all parties and religions for that matter. What he saw was rich NAACP people. It was an unfair assumption on his part. He should have asked himself who (of the rich) are fighting for the poor. Who does a better job for defending the poor. All of the people who have a voice, that is heard in this country, usually have the money as well. It should have been a question of how these rich people work for the poor. Do the rich repubs or the rich Dem's do the best job.

10. I Think It's a Matter of Expectations

Remember when Kerry first announced John Edwards as his running mate, and Bowtie Carlson went into a tizzy because the Democrats didn't have a minority or woman running mate? That's because the Democrats are the party that stands up for women and minorities. Tucker didn't throw a fit at the Republicans for nominating the Cheney, Kemp, Quayle, or Poppy. That's because nobody EXPECTS them to nominate a minority or a woman (which is precisely why I think Condi will be 2008's VP pick - so they can pretend to be the party of minorities and women and some idiots are bound to be fooled by it).

Everyone expects the Republicans to be in the pockets of the rich, so when it's discovered that Republicans are in the pockets of the rich, no one is surprised. Everyone expects Republicans to hate minorities so when it happens, it's no shock to anyone. And so on.

But when Democrats have a lavish celebration... watch out. Just like Ann Coulter or Bill O'Reilly can put out a book and no one throws a fit if they roll up the royalty money and smoke it. But if Michael Moore writes a book or makes a movie, everyone is outraged if he doesn't donate the money to 9/11 families or military families. Republicans are EXPECTED to be greedy bastards. Democrats are held to higher standards and thus are more likely to disappoint even if their behavior isn't even close to as bad as the Republicans'.

Regarding the post: These guys are so full of it, but if they keep repeating something long enough, it takes on a life of its own and becomes part of the cultural landscape.

If one truly espoused liberal ideas, they would see such an incident as cause to criticize and/or reform the NAACP, not suddenly switch to believing in right wing ideals.

I suspect Mr. Lauterbach is a liar. "Limousine liberals" and the NAACP?! Oh my, if it isn't a propaganda-spewing winger's wet dream of a story!
