Inauguration Day protest
There's an email circulating the Internet, maybe you've seen it, urging people to spend 'not one damned dime' on Inauguration Day as a protest to the Iraq war. See http://www.notonedamndime.com/boycott/

As a spin-off of this idea, some friends and I have decided to make a more visible statement: wear black arm bands on January 20.

In emailing friends, message boards, and groups I'm involved with, I'm finding out a lot of people are already planning to do this and others liked the idea and will be doing it. If you think it's a good idea, please wear black, or wear a black arm band on January 20, Inauguration Day, in protest of the Iraq war and this administration's policies that created the war. And tell your friends!

1. Great idea...
but I doubt anybody here in Indiana will even know what it means. I hope I can make it to DC so I can be part of a real protest. =)

3. Apparently this is spreading like a virus (I hope)
It's ditto at http://www.themountainsplash.com/poets_cafe/. I read this a few days ago and it sounds like a great idea to me. I, for one, will plan ahead and will not spend one darn PENNY (I'll be sure to get my lottery tics on the 19th).

Do not watch the ceremonies on TV. That is also a good economic protest. Wear Black and black out the media controlled by the Bush Crime Family

11. How will the TV know if I am watching it?
I don't have a Nielsen box.

Or can the cable company tell that now?

some of those freepers are just psycho. And they can't spell. Crazy and stupid. I'd pity them if I didn't loathe them so much.

15. More spinoffs
Hi: I'm a newbie to DU. I belong to a lot of anti-bush, anti-rw, anti-neocon yahoo groups, I even moderate a few. I have been pushing this strike on the US for over a month. Another great site is http://www.black-thursday.com/home.html

BLACK THURSDAY, January 20, 2005
The Idea Is Simple.
Just Like The President.

This January 20th:

- Call in sick to work
- Don't buy anything
...and write to your newspaper, your senator and your representative to tell them why.

They have a FABULOUS FLYER!
http://www.black-thursday.com/thursdayflyer.pdf

I had been sending out an email "SHUT DOWN THE US ECONOMY FOR 24 HOURS ON JANUARY 20". I don't think the MSM will report on DC protests if 10 million people showed up. But if we hit them in their pocketbooks, which is the only thing they really care about, I think we could call attention to the stolen election.

I own a Quick Lube and Oil Change Business. I also sell Interstate Batteries and my supplier always comes on thursdays. He didn't come by yesterday (he was sick and his replacement missed my stop) so while I won't make any personal purchases, I will have to make some business ones. :grr:  x(

19. Ranger, as a small business owner...
What do you think about this "not one damn dime" idea? I initially thought it was a great idea, but I've recently seem some emails circulating that suggest it may not have the impact we hope it will. Small businesses will be disproportionately harmed by a "boycott" (a Thursday's worth of sales obviously doesn't mean as much to Walmart as it does to "Susie's Flower Shop"), and small biz owners are more likely to be Dem supporters than are the corporate CEOs. I'm not sure if we really want that kind of "collateral damage."

I'd be interested in everyone's thoughts on this, but particularly Gay Ranger's or any other small business owner's. Thanks!

20. My Honest Opinion of the Whole Thing is...
that it is a farce. It will have a negligible effect if any at all. Freeperville will have a big laugh over how the whole thing fizzles and we will look even weaker and more ineffective. Remember the big "gas revolt" last summer? Gas sales were actually up!

If we don't turn our power off before we go to bed wednesday night, like or not, we are going to be participating in the economy. Been to freeperville lately? The are holding off on all their major purchases until that day.

I really don't think that this type of protest is going to amount to much. Most of my customers are service companies and other small businesses so I won't be affected.

It would be a good thing if it worked, but these things rarely, if ever do and history bears this out.
