What options are available to Congressional Democrats in regards to SS?
I'm curious as to which options are going to be available to Democratic Senators and Representatives. If the Republicans are united in trying to privatize Social Security what recourse would we have in Congressional procedures if Democrats united against it(big if). Is a filibuster an option or the only option?

1. Don't count on a united GOP support for Bushoid plot
Every Congresscritter faces an election campaign every two years and this is an issue that hits the pocket books of the one group with a huge voting record, i.e., old folks.

Not to mention women and orphans living on survivors payments.

Not to mention men and women living on SocSec disability.

If I was running the Dems I'd be praying for this one to come to the front burners right away. This could be the stake in the GOP heart, and wouldn't that be a shame?

2. First they need to make counter proposals.
There are some proposals or tweaks to the system that could be politically palatable such as raising/removing the wage base.

The real answer is in actions we and everyone else need to take. Senators, Congresspeople, of every stripe need to hear from us loud and long. I believe it's the only thing that will provide the necessary political cover for them to oppose *'s plan.

3. Our allies in the "Community of Faith"
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 11:38 AM by Coastie for Truth
The "Community of Faith" is not a monolithic, red state, reactionary, evangelical, fundamentalist bloc.

And while some evangelicals may disagree with some progressives on some issues, there is a thread of progressive values that runs through Scripture and much of the Community of Faith.

The battle to stop Bush's "Piratization" of Social Security is a battle where we must seek out and join with our natural allies in the "Community of Faith."
