Prolonging RW agony; Mel Gibson "What the hell are we doing in Iraq?" |
|
From the former darling of the freeping rightwingnuttery; "What the hell are we doing in Iraq? No one can explain to me in a reasonable manner that I can accept why we're there, why we went there, and why we're still there."http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/11/nyregion/11bold.html?oref=login&oref=login&oref=loginOOOOhhhhhh I LOVE that snap-crackle-pop sound of rightwingnut pointy-head explosions! :)

|
But the rightwingnuts pretend that isn't so. Brent Scowcroft, Stormin' Norman, Col. Hackworth, Poppa Bush, Hagel, Lugar, Chafee, James Webb, General Odom, General Joe Hoare, Col. Turner, General McPeak, Rep. Ron Paul, Rep. Doug Bereuter, all the Republicans who voted against the IWR, etc...they're all actually "LIBRULS", ya see.
Rightwingnuts are so easily CONNED DUPED TRICKED FOOLED by bush because they're so damn good at CONNING DUPING TICKING FOOLING themselves.

Strict Catholic...except he screws around on his wife, for example. Dunno how he reconciles some of his beliefs with each other.
Reminds me of Spencer Tracy in that way; wouldn't divorce coz that's BAD, yet lived openly "in sin" with his mistress, which isn't a nice thing to do to either woman, or to his kids, especially back then.
To the rightwingnuts tho you MUST agree with EVERYTHING bush says & does...or else you're a "librul traitor". LOL!!!

26. I don't think anyone "hated" him |
|
for making a movie about Jesus. I think that he got himself on some peoples wrong side by comments he made during and just after he made his grizzly film. He seemed oblivious to concerns by moderate and progressive Christians and Jews that the movie was unduly antagonistic. He said something to the effect that (paraphrasing) "It's the Truth and if anyone can't handle the Word of God, then that isn't my problem". Well, as many moderate Christians will tell you, it is the reader's job to interpret the "scriptures" using common sense, sensitivity, and an open heart. None of these things were really evident in Mel's porno/violent torture movie. I have never disliked Mel, myself, I don't tend to give anyone any substantial credit simply because they are famous, so he didn't "disappoint" me in any way. That's why, I guess, I was a little sarcastic in my previous post - sorry about that.

Easy to say, "What the hell are we doing in Iraq?" when the shit is hitting the fan.
Takes a bit more courage to stand up and ask why before we ever invade.
Mel is the guy who: if we weren't losing three Marines every day he would think things were fine and dandy.

Catholics are STILL allowed to think for themselves. I made this point a thousand times before and during the election. Rove's smokescreen regarding the Catholic vote didn't fool me one bit. I am kinda still a Catholic. Haven't been to church in a while. My entire family is Catholic and NONE of us voted for *. Catholic's don't believe EVERYTHING their church tells them.
Many of us REGULARLY practice birth control, not abstinence. When was the last time you walked into a Catholic church and saw 10 children sitting in the pew next to their "good" Catholic parents? I would guess sometime in the 1930's. After all we are still told that if we confess our sins and say our Hail Mary's we are forgiven.
I saw Mel's movie too. It was a great movie. Very moving. Jesus was a LIBERAL. Most Catholics still believe this.

My wife is Catholic (a regular Mass-goer) and she is fairly liberal and a real Caligula disliker (she hesitates at the "H" word). Also she has been married to me for 29 years and hasn't run away screaming nor killed me (yet, thankfully). No, I know far more Catholics who are liberals than the other thing...

22. Never confuse Catholics with fundamentalist and evangelicals |
|
They won't like that much. Maybe we still feel guilty for the Crusades, I don't know. Needless to say Catholics believe in forgiveness and charity not Old Testament hellfire and brimstone therefore they often ignore the "advice" of their church and vote for candidates that promote charity and forgiveness. Those are NOT the "values" of this administration. The comparison of Kerry to that other Catholic guy that many Catholics still mourn was uncanny. I believe many Catholics voted for him with that in mind.

28. The key for Catholic theology is |
|
that the Bible is NOT regarded as the sole authority, nor is it considered inerrant (incapable of falsehood). Catholics believe in evolution and a heliocentric solar system and all that good stuff. Plus nobody really checks up on you in the Catholic Church. You kind of do what you want.

The recent scandal with their priests had a profound effect on just how much they are willing to listen to the Pope. I read his statement, it really didn't go far enough. A lot of Catholics were upset by this scandal. Abortion was not an issue for Catholics this go round. At least, I don't think so. Actually, I have to admit I don't think it has ever been as high on our agenda as some would like to believe. There is no priest standing behind Catholic's at the voting booth. I think they break for liberal values in greater numbers than the church could imagine.
On Edit: BTW I also don't buy the Catholics are anti-semetic bit. The bible says it was a certain way. Mel portrayed it pretty true. As a Catholic, I have never heard any other Catholic blame the Jews for Christ's death. In fact, Catholicism and Judiasm share a lot of values. Catholics believe Jesus was our Jewish savior, Jews believe he was just another Jewish prophet. I say he was both, but he was definately a liberal.

Rush was all about how "The Passion" was for, by and will always be about how Repugs have the key to Heaven's Gate.
Now he'll have to someone find out that Mel was or is a: A) Pedophile B) Adulterer (wait...so is Rush...) C) Drug user (wait...so is Rush...) D) Hollywood Elite (wait...so is Rush...um...nah...) E) Damn foreigner
Maybe there will be "Passion" DVD burning parties by the theocon twits. This is luscious stuff.

Even though I don't practice my faith on a regular basis anymore I still call myself a Catholic and I can't stand to see how many people don't have a clue what Catholics are about. Maybe it is all the standing and kneeling and standing and kneeling that has them confused. Catholic prayer is so formal. Maybe that is what they don't understand. I don't know!

At the time, I defended Mel's right to make his movie as an act of freedom of expression. I love Mel Gibson, but I didn't want to see "Passion" & I didn't.
Smearing Mel Gibson for his movie is no different than what the other side did to Michael Moore.
Leave them both alone. They're filmakers, not politicians.

It was the Latin mass that confabulated people....
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaay can beat anyone playing dooooooooooooooooominos!"
"Noooooooooooooooo, yooooooooouuuuuuuu caaaaaaaaaaaan't!'
And then there was the chest beating, to the accompaniment of "Me a cowboy, me a cowboy, me a Mexican cowboy...."
Now that they do it in English, it's actually MORE boring than it was in childhood. At least back then you thought it must have been really mysterious, if they said it in Latin. I swear, the standing, sitting, and kneeling is a device to ensure people stay awake!
My favorite line: "The Mass is ended. Go in Peace."
Sorry, I just never have been very good at organized religion!!!

Catholic prayer is, to me, like the chanting of Buddhist monks. All that glitz, glamor and mysteriousness is just another form of meditative chanting, but for sure the sitting, kneeling, standing bit is designed to keep our chanting from producing a trance-like state of being! Latin mass is still beautiful. I hardly ever get to see one anymore.

Catholics believe in the just war theory. The Iraq war does not meet the criteria for a just war which boil down to self defense and bringing a halt to genocide.
The Pope is opposed to the Iraq war too.
I wonder what Mel Gibson's views on the death penalty are?

and i think the fundamentalist took it and ran with it in the lowest of vibration. i think mel was disgusted with the reaction of his film immediately. i dont htink mel ever embraced the way hos movie was used. i heard an interview before the movie cam out, during the hype where he flat out criticized bush and his policy. he never was a right wing supporter. conservative ole fashion male that has grown in age, i have heard other interviews of him. never was about attacking gibson, it is the way the baptist promoted this movie and feeding it to their young i had issue
not a movie i would watch. i think he left out the real message in jesus dieing for us, and would never let a child watch.
