Poll question: Which defeated presidential nominee would have made the best Prez?
For the sake of this poll, "defeated" = "not inaugurated."

1. You should throw Jesse Jackson in there.

2. He never won the nomination.
Of course, he's in good company on that list.

7. No problem.
I wish we could make a poll of the best contenders for the nomination through the years, but there are just so many options. For '04 alone, you've got nine from which to choose.

3. Al Gore gets my vote
because he had such an intregal role in the Clinton administration and would have continued the peace and prosperty. He didn't run a very good campaign, but that doesn't always mean you'll be a bad president.

6. Good candidate. Bad campaign.
I get the feeling that - given a few more weeks - he could have won far more decisively than he did. I get a similar feeling about Kerry.

10. AMEN!!
"{Gore} didn't run a very good campaign, but that doesn't always mean you'll be a bad president."

Thank you!

Thank you for making this very astute point! I mention this all the time in Presidential campaign conversations.

On the other side of the coin, there's George W. Bush: brilliant campaigner (I think we should go ahead and give both him and Karl Rove credit on this one), he just can't GOVERN worth a damn.

Electability is always important; how you'll do in the office once elected should matter more. Unfortunately, that's not the case in this country... :eyes:

12. Republicans have mastered an old marketing adage:

"Don't sell the steak. Sell the sizzle."

Unfortunately, most of their candidates are all sizzle - no steak.

5. Had to Go With Gore On This One...
I have a feeling I might have gone for Stevenson, poor guy, had he run for President in my lifetime... :)

8. I agree Gore would probably be the best
but what a great bunch of "losers" we had. Any of them would be better than the Republicans who won.

9. Of course.
But the American people are known for sometimes making bizarre choices.

11. Just imagine
where we would be with four more years of Clintonomics as compared to the last four years.

16. Gore
especially in light of Leon Fuerth's revelations about Gore's Global Disaster Information Network. http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/01/07/opinion/edfuerth.html

Gore is a visionary.
