NBC's Brian Williams ran a story about Texas Evangelicals...
I am writhing a letter to him regarding a particularly troublesome lawyer he interviewed. The lawyer said he got involved in politics because he saw a Bush protester with a sign that read "Bible Beating liar!"

Here is the email I sent Williams:

Dear Mr. Williams,

I am a middle class, LIBERAL, Catholic, white, woman, living in the "exurbs" as Karl Rove likes to call it. I listened to your story on Evangelical Christians in Texas on the nightly news tonight. I have to tell you and the lawyer who claims that an anti-bush sign motivated him to get involved in politics that liberals one and all have ABSOLUTELY no issues with the Bible.

The fact of the matter is a whole lot of liberals are ALSO Christians. The sign Sawyer referred to was trying to point out to the Evangelicals and Fundamentalists that Christian values do NOT include lying.

Our beef is with the President, NOT the Evangelicals and Fundamentalists Christians. However, there is a growing trend among these two groups of Christians to attack other forms of Christianity. This group has become every bit as fanatical as the Muslims currently holding that religion up as an opportunity to spread hatred. Liberal Christians accept ALL forms of religion. To us any TRUE path to values that help humanity is a good thing for humanity.

I would like to invite Mr. Sawyer to re-examine EVERY statement President Bush has made regarding the Iraq war, Christianity, the environment, his connections to oil, his commitment to prosecuting corporate crime against Americans, his tax breaks for all Americans, his international standing, abortion, social security, basically anything he has ever said and done since his inauguration in 2000. I think if Mr. Sawyer was willing to examine the relationship between what President Bush says and what President Bush does, he will discover that his own Christian beliefs are much more in line with liberal Democrats than they are with President Bush

2. Beautiful, wise letter
Kudos for crystallizing an important, and far too unreported message.

3. Nice letter
I also saw that NBC News piece. It was apalling and disgusting. Very one sided with almost no rebuttle (maybe one quasi-rebuttle for a second or two).

4. Excellent! I also wrote a letter to him, but
I thought the protester's sign was "Bible toting liar". Either way, I agree it was troubling. Great job on your letter!

Rock on!

Dear Mr. Williams,

I would like to request that you show the other side - the other voters - as a companion piece to your "Evangelical Voters" report.

Liberals, are another group of voters that deserve your airtime. Liberals often get treated as if "liberal" is a dirty word, and can relate to feeling misunderstood, as the evangelicals in your report stated they sometimes feel.

Liberals, also vote values: equality in education, support and care of the poor, acceptance of all, acceptance of diverse lifestyles, against torture and the death penalty, and for and the rights of all. And of course, there is the old fashioned, biblical value of TRUTH that liberals espouse. I was surprised that the gentleman on your story couldn't understand what the protest sign "Bible Toting Liar" meant. It means that it is Not Okay to lie (http://www.bushlies.net/pages/10/) in the name of the lord. It would be fair and balanced (which is what the white house says it wants) of you to allow a liberal viewpoint to explain to those Americans, who like the individual in your report, don't understand our slogans or our values.

thank you,
xxxxxxxxxx
Denver, CO

10. I think you are correct. I didn't refer to the exact words in my letter
because I wasn't sure. I'm glad more of us wrote in response to this blather.

Do you wish for it to be banned, burned, or not available for public consumption? As I said most liberals want to allow people to have every right to practice whatever faith they feel connected too. We just don't want those people to force that version of faith down our throats. Even liberal Atheists fit that description.

7. It said 'Bible Toting Liar.'
Either way, I agree completely. I saw it tonight, and when the Laywer said he didn't understand it, me and my mom both blurted out at the same time "Because he IS a liar!"

Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 12:26 AM by manly
and a whole lot of them are agnostics and atheists. I agree with you politically, but as far as I'm concerned, religion is one of the most harmful institutions in existence. All religions are shams, frauds, purveyors of intolerance, ignorance, perversion, etc.So I suggest you practice separation of church and politics; it's a good idea.\
And for you to say that I don't have a beef with the Fundamentalists
couldn't be further from the truth. You presume too much when you say this.

Liberals values are the values of INCLUSION not EXCLUSION. I am sorry you feel the way you do, because your views are the kind of views that keep conservatives from finding out the truth. Having said that, as a Liberal, I STILL value your opinion because that is a LIBERAL value.

If we keep cutting down these people they WILL get stronger. I disagree with thier views and I agree with you that those views are narrow-minded and EXCLUSIVE. I believe there are still those within those groups whose views can be changed. I presumed nothing but that as a liberal you would be willing to have the opportunity to change the minds of those that are willing to listen.
