C-Span Guest Howard Zinn - WOW!
Today on C-Span they had a guest named Howard Zinn and he blew me away! He's an Author & Historian and his newest book is 1492 - Present.

This is the FIRST time I've heard ANYONE really laying it all on the line. He talked about so many topics, and had some very harsh words about The Idiot & Co., the War in Iraq and America in general. I found myself agreeing with him on most EVERYTHING!

I'm ashamed to say I've never heard of him, but he's no spring chicken from MA!

Did anyone else see him and does anyone else know MORE about him??

Where have I been????

2. Zinn is awesome
Howard Zinn is one of the best historians alive today, IMO. People's History of the United States should be required reading for all. READ IT!!!

4. He's well known in lefty circles...
... as the author of The People's History of the United States, which sort of fills in the history you didn't get in high school.

Interesting man--not as reviled on the right as Noam Chomsky, but close. :)

6. Howard Zinn Doesn't Get Much Publicity in the MSM
so he's very easy to miss. But he's probably THE leading person in progressive American history.

Zinn's magnum opus was A People's History of the United States. Highly recommended. He's also put out quite a few book of essays.

He was on Jon Stewart's show last week, too. Must be part of a new book tour.

I was just so taken in by him and am a "big fan" already. Will be researching more and will be buying the book!

8. Sad commentary on the MSM that this is the first time you have heard of
him. He is giant among historians and humanists. He has written many books, and every one of them is worth reading.
He was on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show recently, and has been on Bill Maher.

14. I Certainly Agree That I've
missed the boat here. I was so inspired by him and will be buying his book very soon. And I agree that he is DIVINE! Sure made getting up today a real boost!

Missed him on Bill Maher and for some reason because I have a Dish, I have never been able to find out Jon Stewart is on. He was on the Sundance Channel for a while, but I keep missing where he's at. I would LOVE to watch him all the time.

He sure had some of the REPUKES literally screaming at him, all the while I'm busting a gut!

It's #249 on Direct-TV. Jon Stewart is on at 11 and 11:30 p.m. lately, and no doubt earlier, too, but I only think about his show late at night. And it may not be on on Fridays, unless they've changed it! :hi:

38. The show was on hiatus for a couple of weeks -- maybe

it's back and you just haven't checked? I know I got out of the habit myself. I'd get a TiVo SeasonPass but I don't really need four copies of the same show on my TiVo every day!

BTW, someone below recommends LINK TV to you. If your system is like mine (I'm in Georgia), that's channel 375. I didn't find it until maybe a month after I had it, when I heard it mentioned on C-SPAN and went looking. New channels pop up all the time.

9. Howard Zinn is one of the greatest historians of our time
His landmark book, A People's History of the United States, 1492-Present should be required reading in all of our schools, to offer a counter viewpoint to US history to the "story of the victors" commonly taught in our country. It is the history of the US told from the point of view of the dispossessed, downtrodden, and persecuted peoples -- the Native Americans, the slaves and abolitionists, the early labor organizers and feminists, the anarchists and socialists, the antiwar activists, the civil rights movement, the rural and urban poor, and so on. The story of history he tells is not a linear story made up of "facts", but rather a grand tale of conflict and controversy, of steps forward and steps back, as different groups sought to overthrow the yoke of oppression they labored under and realize a more egalitarian and progressive vision for America.

He was a bombadier in WWII, born of working class parents in Brooklyn, NY. He then went on to Columbia University on the GI Bill, earning his PhD in History. He taught for a time at Spelman College in Atlanta, becoming introduced to the civil rights movement while working there. After being fired from Spelman, he moved on to Boston University, where he was eventually named Professor Emiterus of History.

He's widely considered to be a radical, because he's an unabashed pacifist and socialist, so he doesn't get much exposure in the mainstream media. He is, however, one of the most influential historians of the 20th century, and his "People's History" has sold over a million copies since its first publishing in 1980, and is actually used as a supplemental text is some classrooms.

He was one of the primary influences in propelling me to study history toward the eventual goal of earning my own PhD, teaching high school history, and finally attaining a university position.

17. The best advice I can give you -- READ HIS BOOK!
You can only read it in small doses, and it's rather long, but it will be certain to transform many of the preconceived notions you had about US history.

What isn't important is how you've missed him to this point. What IS important is that you've now discovered him. Be ready for a wild ride that will turn a lot of your thoughts on their head.

34. He was called "Mr. Zinn" today and I thought "Mister?"

Thanks for confirming that he has a Ph.D. (or HOLDS the Ph.D., as administrators are wont to say.) I know there are idiots who think only M.D.s should be called "Doctor" but that's ridiculous. I only saw the last bit of WJ today and hope Brian Lamb wasn't stripping him of his doctorate for the entire show.

He has a heart of something divine.

He's got wisdom and knowledge and compassion.

He's what I aspire to be or dream of being when I am old. (Well, not quite, since I'm female, but you get the idea.)

It's so clear when you listen to him that what motivates him is something pure. It's beautiful to have people like that working among us.

22. Zinn is terrific. Too bad so many people are ignorant of his work.
Both those who don't know of him, and those who do.

They can't refute him, either, as he uses official documents as source material. Oh, but they try, because they don't like the truth as much as they claim they do.

I need to check out that interview!

24. You should also read "The Zinn Reader."
You will get a wider appreciation of the range of his thinking.

Zinn is a heroic figure. The reason he isn't widely known to many sections of the population is that he tells too much of the truth, and thus is dangerous to "the system."

Sad commentary on our culture when our wisest men are unknown.

Did you hear all the hostility? People don't like to have their illusions stripped away. His responses to the "anti-American" charge is on the mark. Sadly, he has probably had lots of practice.

questioning the WH propaganda version of what happened on 9-11 and the wisdom of the idiotic US response to it and they pulled him off.
