King Chimp in NE FL-LIVE on "demand-driven" education...

"It's a demand-driven education system..."

He's at the local community college explaining to a glum audience about the wonders of his new method of stealing their Pell Grants.

He's using Republican-speak to do so, of course.

The audience looks less that thrilled. In fact, I have seen happier faces at funerals. The local news just panned the audience. LOL!

The community college in Jacksonville has an important story to tell, and the president is highlighting that," White House spokesman Taylor Gross said.

It's also in a community which Bush won soundly over Democrat John Kerry in the election, before talk of decommissioning the carrier began.

"It will, to an awful lot of people, look like a lack of appreciation," Slade said, "but again, we don't elect people to do what's wanted by a specific part of the country."

1. Now a local Republican is licking Bush's butt
...

I guess the goal now is not to train people to be educated but just vo-tech them, IF they can get jobs. :eyes:

2. i lived in jacksonville years ago ... UNF was in its infancy then...
the University (as did the FCC campuses) had a certain air of liberal/progressive underpinning to it that, at least from a distance, and from alumni mail that i get, does not seem to be present there now. the crowd i hung around with was mostly into the arts and poetry/fiction writing stuff. there were great free art programs in the parks, at the university, and in the junior college, and theater tickets were affordable. it seems to me that the guy running the UNF these days is a bush shill. too sad for the university which, in my opinion, loses its breath of fresh air which was breathed then. Anyone differing with my impression can either flame me, or instruct my ignorance. :-(

3. You nailed it.

The current President of UNF is the former Republican mayor of the city who is a proponent of running everything like a business. Oh, and he *is* a Bush shill. I understand he used to be a Dem but switched since this place is Republican Central in FL.

The current mayor is the scion of the Gate Gasoline fortune, also into running the place like a business.

There is still a small "liberal" bohemian area near Five Points, if you are familiar with that area.

The rest of the place is probably one of the worst places I have ever lived, and I have lived all over. I hate it and intend on moving as soon as possible, tho' I have met quite a few progressives who are trying to change things here now. When one local Dem who won about 2% of the vote ran on a campaign of livable wage, etc, she barely got any votes.

They took the money for the libraries (The Better Jacksonville Plan) and somehow are using it for other things (read-lining the pockets of the local builders who are Bush shills.)

The amusing part of this whole thing is how Bush waited until after the election to perhaps ship the Kennedy out of the area, and how that is now upsetting these local jokers. Well, duh. Of course he was going to wait until after he was elected.

Thanks for your post.
