1. It's old news
Abe evidently shared a room (and presumably a bed) with another man for a few years in his early adulthood. It wasn't a terribly unusual situation back then, though.

There's a new book out that offers some new evidence but it's hardly conclusive.

7. Yes, this has been speculated about for years.
They were travelling and staying somewhere. The two men ended up sharing a bed. Some say it wasn't unusual for back then, esp. if there weren't two beds. Others say it's fishy.

Guess we'll never know. But he wasn't GAY gay. AT most he would've been bisexual, I would think, since he was married for years and had several children (presumably he liked having sex with women). And there are writings by him indicating a deep love for a woman before Mary Todd, but she married someone else.

9. Sharing beds was quite common then, and they became close friends.
http://archive.salon.com/books/it/1999/04/30/lincoln/

It is often difficult to understand the past through the eyes of the present.

"The strikingly handsome 23-year-old merchant took pity on the man and invited him into his own bed, free of charge, which happened to be just upstairs. The traveler inspected the bed and, looking into the merchant's sparkling blue eyes, agreed on the spot. For the next four years the two men shared that bed along with their most private fears and desires.

If this sounds like the opening of a homoerotic dime-store novel whose subsequent scenes feature fiery loins and ecstatic eruptions, hold your panting. The year is 1837, the place Springfield, Ill., and the leading men none other than our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, and his lifelong friend Joshua Speed.

It is a story that historians have told and retold, puzzled over and reinterpreted, dismissed and decorated. Some describe Lincoln's acceptance of Joshua Speed's generous offer as terse and matter-of-fact; others as beaming and emotional. What none of them questions is that Lincoln and Speed's years of living together cemented a friendship unparalleled in its intimacy and tenderness in Lincoln's life. So far, all major historians have stopped short of intimating that Lincoln was ever involved in a romantic affair with a man -- in fact, they explicitly discourage such interpretations."

11. sharing a bed out of convenience here and there in 1857 is
one thing; sharing a bed with a friend for two years is quite another.

2. Have you read about Mary Todd Lincoln?
If I was married to her, I would have SAID I was gay just to have an excuse to sleep in my own bedroom. That way, the Secret Service would be able to keep her from killing me in my sleep.

I find it sad that people have to be judged on the basis of their sexuality. Heteros have been responsible for some seriously bad shit so maybe we should comment on the inter-relationship bewteen heteros and shitty events. Anyone who believes that sexuality has ANYTHING to do with competence, or judgement, has their head up their backside.

This is nothing more than a diversion from the real issues. If I was asked which was more obscene, people doing what they want on a consensual basis or bombing women and kids, I know which of the two I'd regard as deviant.

BTW, I'm a non-practising hetero.

edit: speled rong...agen

17. It is old news, but they were talking about it on the news the other day.
I didn't catch it all, so I'm not sure what prompted it to be brought up.
