Sessions would raise combat death benefit
Currently, soldier's family receives $12,000 'gratuity'

By PATRICIA C. McCARTER
Times Staff Writer

When a U.S. soldier dies in combat, his family gets a $12,000 "death gratuity," his country's show of appreciation for service.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile, says that's a paltry thank-you, and when Congress reconvenes on Jan. 24, he plans to introduce the HEROESAct that would raise combat death benefits to a possible $500,000.

He said Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., will co-sponsor the Honoring Every Requirement of Exemplary Service Act.

Sessions unveiled his bill Tuesday while addressing the membership of the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County. His idea is to raise the death gratuity to $100,000, and the military-sponsored life insurance maximum would go from $250,000 to $400,000.

2. They will probably attach this legislation to a bill
that allows oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

They want the war to continue so that they make more money, greed is running this country right now not a sense of commitment to your country people especially not the soldiers who are fighting their dirty war. The repubs have not sense of loyalty to the soldiers or they were put * on the mat for his lies.
